They could have one of the most experienced teams in a year or two with all the youth they had starting.

Works for me. That team is horribly sloppy and undisciplined. Offense, defense, and special teams.

Our division needs someone to replace Nebraska as "most likely to completely self destruct during any given game"

i mean, what are realistic expectations for Illinois?

Exactly, and they had the meltdowns before him that led to him being hired - the Beckman firing for mistreatment of players, and then they fired the next guy just before spring practice (crazy timing!)

I thought they showed improvement this year, but they have a long ways to go. Can't imagine they would have had anyone good willing to take the job with the mess they've made of things lately either

IMO, Lovie is a great fit at Illinois and has the potential to make them an 8 win team fairly often. Who knows, if he gets the right QB they could be really good at some point. He's doing things the right way and eventually it will pay off.

Firing a coach is not always the best thing for a program, it can really disrupt the program and cause a team to start from scratch. Illinois is not a top 30 job and it might be hard to get a top coach.

Nebraska has twice replaced a couple of coaches who could get you 9 or 10 ten wins a year. Nebraska got stuck with Callahan and Riley. For Illinois I think it make sense to give Lovie a couple of more years.

Exactly.

Firing Frank & Bo to bring in Clownahan & Smiling Mike was a complete & total disaster. Yep, I think Illinois is doing the right thing.

Hiring Riley to replace Bo may not have been a great move but Bo had to go. Period. Obviously Riley was not a good hire and in hindsight, we could have hired Frost right then and there. IMAGINE where we could be right now IF that had happened. IF Tom would have had the foresight to can Bo before he retired, he could have hired Frost on the spot. IMAGINE Armstrong in Frost's offense.....sigh. IF only.

Illinois is a dangerous team in the future. They have a lot of talent on both sides. If they get a legit QB, they could do some serious damage. Corbin averaged 8.5 yards a carry in Big 10 play...that is disgusting. He was gonna go for 300 on us before getting hurt. Their DL is going to be problematic the next couple seasons. Hopefully their DE goes pro he is a game-changer.

Oh c'mon my friend, Riley wasn't a "good hire"? Haha......what a massive understatement. Two losing seasons in three years.....yeah, just maybe he wasn't a good hire.

Of course Bo winning 9 or 10 games for his seven consecutive years showed he had to go. Period. At any price, gotta keep losing.

Hindsight wasn't required to know the Riley hiring was a bad decision. Some forethought would have been great at the time...

Didn't Nebraska extend Riley in September of '17? That means this board can never roll our eyes at any other coaching extension. It's off the table.

That was necessary to assure that all of those Cali-braska kids Riley was recruiting - and their parents - that they would all be together a full four years.

Coaches and ADs have a very nice racket going, provided they never run out of other people's money.

The state has horrible financials. They are not paying real money for a coach right now.
The money for a coach doesn't come from the state budget. That's athletic department money and they all rely HEAVILY on booster donations. Do people honestly think their tax dollars are paying for Scott Frost's salary?

I'm a logical guy. I believed the logic that Riley would be able to win at NU with the resources we had to offer that he didn't have at OSU. Logically that could have happened. What wasn't logical was Eichorst telling him he couldn't recruit JUCOs and that he had to fire Banker. We can second guess things til the end of time but we can't change history. We're not writing text books here.

They have him in commit Isaiah Williams
Could be a game changer for them
I have seen the kid play, more of an athlete than a QB. Not sure if he is as tall as they have him listed on rivals. Would not be surprised if he ends up a receiver for Illinois.
