We could be sitting at 21 recruits and the 20th or 21st best class in the country according to 247 Sports (probably 17th on Rivals I am guessing). I've been hearing from people who really pay attention to the numbers that our goal is 25 scholarship players this year (oversigning up to 3), so possibly 28 players.

Let's say we at least sign 4 more players:

Who are they, and what are our positions of need?

Targets left:

1 - Ty Robinson (beastly DL)

Who else is standing out? What else do we need? Here is a list of commits by position. Add in 1 more RB if we get Robinson tomorrow. It looks like we need 1 safety, likely that JUCO guy who was once part of Maryland's class and is a 4 star recruit. What else?

1 - Quarterback

3 - Running back

2 - Wide receiver

1 - Tight end

4 - Offensive linemen

1 - Defensive tackle

2 - Defensive end

1 - Outside linebacker

2 - Inside linebacker

0 - Safety

2 - Cornerback

1 - Athlete

0 - Special teams

Using your number of 4 -

2 OL
1 OLB
1 CB

on top of that for the remaining 3

WR
another OLB
S

unless we get Robinson, then take out the 2nd OLB

One thing we need is a good pass rusher coming off the edge...JC or true Freshman.

This defense is definitely lacking a player of this caliber would make a huge difference..

Are there any good DT's out there that Nebraska might get to commit?

I don't think we need one. We're getting that massive NT from JUCO, plus 2-3 Defensive Ends (if we land Robinson, 3).

@Tuco Salamanca, are you saying we are picking up 6 OL's? That's...kind of a lot. I guess? Agree that we could easily use 1-2 more DB's (1 CB and 1 Safety).

I'm not sure we need a pass rusher right now; we have 2 guys developing (Tannor and Thomas), and we may have 1 or 2 more developing as we speak. We don't have much of a pass rush now, but Tannor is going to be awesome.

Some needs I see, not sure we will have the numbers to address all this class:

OLB: We need an impact player here, JUCO or grad transfer most likely
CB: We need an impact player here too, someone that can some in and play day one, either covering the slot or playing outside so some one like Bootle can move inside to cover the slot
NT: We could really use a HS kid here, as we didn't take one last year
Ty Robinson, too good not to take. Probably priority #1 after we get Wandale tomorrow.

WR: We need an impact player to play on the outside. We have JD in the slot, but lose basically all our production on the outside with Stan graduating.
HS Interior OL: Only took one last year, don't have one signed this year.
JUCO/Grad OT: IF we can get an impact player here, we can move Farniok inside and sure up the interior.

IMHO 6 OL's is not enough for this class. We only got one last year in Will Farniok and he is a project. So 6 is the minimum we should sign IMO, anything less and we'd be behind

As I said in a previous post

I think our Top 3 targets should be

1. Ty Robinson
2. Wandale Robinson
3. Noa Pola-Gates

Then

4. OL (Juco/Grad Transfer OffensiveTackle)
5. OL (HS Interior Lineman)

I am also going to throw in Chris Walker needs to get his *** back on the OL where he would help this team more!

Yes on the OL. We have only 9 returning scholarship linemen. I know we have a couple of walk ons that are on the two deep but even with 11 dudes that's still a bit short. We need 15 or so OL on scholarship.

Bland is a JUCO, and the junior class to be has 4 guys, maybe 5 with Bland is huge, so we need to build depth behind that. Lynn and Anderson will have to redshirt and Benhart will probably not. So the classes will start to even out. Different from what we have now which is

3 seniors
1 junior
4 soph
2 RS freshmen
2 true freshmen

So next year

1 senior
4 junior
2 Soph
2 RS freshman

Possible Remaining Commits (take with grain of salt):

Wandale Robinson - 4* ATH (Duck-R/All purpose Back) - Should be N tomorrow - Ty Robinson - 4* DE - Probably headed to USC - Noa Pola-Gates - 4* Safety - Probably headed to Alabama - Markquese Bell - JUCO Safety - Probably N - Was a 4* out of HS - went to Maryland - / Brant Banks - 3* OT - He will be N if we want him - Jamel Starks - 3* Safety - He will be N if we want him -
Who knows who will be in the mix after the early signing period. The staff moves fast. Darien Chase was offered in the beginning of Oct, visited a couple weeks later and committed a week after.

Sounds good. Just was wondering if another is being targeted. If a four star fell into their lap, that would be a bonus then.

A bit of a stretch here but with the implosion this year at TCU I'm hearing that they are having a hard time maintaining recruits. This kid is verbally committed to them but perhaps with the timing and with the right guy calling him up it might be worth a shot to try and get someone like this... I've watched him play every week as he goes to my kids high school and I'll tell you this much... kid is in on every play, hits HARD! has the drive this team desires with massive heart!

We currently have 11 freshmen receivers on the roster including McQuitty. Some of them (like Warner) are walkons. It is a shame a few of those guys can't emerge so we can stop talking about having no receivers.

But we have Cam Jurgens going to the OL now, probably as a Center. With him doing that plus Farniok Jr, that's two OL from last year's class.

I mean I'm not gonna complain, sure, grab as many OL's as you want I guess. I'm just thinking that with 4-5 spots left, what do we focus on?

- Obviously Ty Robinson is a beast, try to get him if you can. I know he's been trending to USC but USC also may fire their coach after this year.

- Banks is an option to grab at OL if we need him, but I thought they wanted him on the DL?

- A pass rush specialist is fine, I just think that we have a few who are going to be Sophomores next year who are really talented, so hopefully they can start having an impact more so than this year.

- Markquese Bell as a S should be a great pickup. He's a 3 for 3 guy and was a highly rated 4 star recruit out of high school.

That is a little misleading, as you can't really expect freshman walk-ons to make an impact. We currently have 3 freshman scholarship players at WR:
Hunt and McGriff are true Fr and McQuitty is a redshirt Fr. Warner is a redshirt Fr that will probably earn a scholarship, so you could add him, but McGriff sounds like he is being moved to TE, so at most we have 3 scholarship guys between the two classes.

Also, this boards obsession with McQuitty is fascinating. Yes he was a 4-star recruit, but 4-stars fail to pan out all the time. Plus, he is coming off of a surgery. It seems like we are always questioning why he isn't playing, because of his rating out of HS, but never those same inquiries about guys like: Lee, Anderson, Wilbon, Dismuke, etc.

Don't forget Jurgens is moving to Offensive Line. It's also possible that Ethan Piper could play on the offensive line as well.

We need DBs, WRs, and pass rushers the most IMO. We lose a lot in the secondary and WR in the next 2 years.

Latest update from the pay side is that we will likely be taking between 28-30 recruits this cycle. I don't know how the numbers compute but with attrition, count backs and the B10 allowing a +3 it is apparently possible. They are also looking to bring in 20-25 walk-ons for a potential total of 50-55 new recruits for 2019. My personal choice would be:

2 WR (Robinson +1)
2 OL (1 Juco OT + 1 HS best get any position)
3 DB (Bell (juco), Pola-Gates, Sanguinetti)
1 DE (Robinson)
2 OLB

I know it hasn't been popular and poo pooed on here but Sean Callahan said on Big Red Wrap up several weeks ago that he expected that we would take 30. With the recent interesting news article on here about the new rules i wasn't sure if 30 was still possible.

Guess we will see.

I don't think we need another player that's only going to play on third downs. I don't think we need another pass rusher in this class. I think our pass rushing problems so far are mostly coaching, scheme, and effort related issues and not that we don't have the players to do it. We need the players who play every down to be able to generate some kind of pass rush and not have to rely on a pass rushing specialist to do it.

We do need another qb. Bunch and Vedral haven't shown much to give us much confidence. I thought OL would be more of a need but all of a sudden, they are playing much better. Unfortunately we might need another WR this class, but I'd only want to take one if he's a stud.

On the defensive side, it's hard to know what our actual needs are because I don't even think our best players have been playing at certain positions. This defense looks a lot different with Deontai, Collin Miller and Jojo Domann and a capable nose tackle playing.

What’s up with Walker? He’s not sniffing the field as a DL - not yet, anyway. Is he better suited to be an OT? Big need there.

Another angle on this is to trust the coaches’ knowledge of roster needs. They’re the most aware of the behind the scene guys who they think will develop and pan out and those who won’t.
No problem with our speculations and analysis (it’s what we do), but just wanted to point out we should trust them to focus on their biggest needs. *not meant to be an accusation of yall, just reminder.

Having said that, I’m always concerned with the trenches where we’ve struggled so much and often take the longest to develop.
I don’t think we need a pass rusher UNLESS he’s elite. We’re fine w/ numbers, but always open to a game changer.
DB could still be thin and WR potentially.

I’m excited to see how the class finishes.

Wiltfong, usually very reliable, changed his crystal ball for Wandale R from NU to undecided, then to kentucky today, appears some family pressure for him to stay close to home, from what I heard

I'm not close to recruiting (intentionally), but unless someone has insider knowledge, this thread feels like a huge jinx.

Yep, I felt the same way, and those counting their chickens before they hatched cost us another 4-star. Winking

I believe his girlfriend goes to UK, plus his family is there in KY, plus they are doing well right now, plus he'd probably be able to start. Plus he's being recruited by a very good recruiter.

Plenty of reasons to think he might go there for other than money or other nefarious happenings.

You're right. There are reasons to consider it. But the reason he is making the last minute switch are because the adults in his life are selling his services to the highest bidder. Who knew they'd launder money to the family through his dad's gym via a whole bunch of gym memberships?

Has Nebraska ever lost a recruit simply because a kid wanted to go to another school? Every recruit we lose is because someone paid his family money.

How do we get any recruits at all? If Kentucky is paying the 4th best recruit in Kentucky an alleged $100k, how do we get guys like Jackson Hannah, Dedrick Mills and Luke McCaffery to come to Nebraska for free? Strange

Well the McCaffery’s are loaded so $100k or whatever the going rate for a kid that never started a game In Colorado until his senior year probably isn’t worth enough to warrant the risk for their reputation....

I understand a lot of the things you do/say but sometimes you’re reaching and going out of your way to trash Nebraska without actually blantantly saying what you’re incinuating.

Kentucky fans are now saying that Robinson's dad was upset that Frost didn't call him to thank him after he committed here. They also said that Frost originally promised him he would take JD Spielman's position and JD would be moved, but wen't back on that promise this week. Yeah, I'm sure Frost told him we would move our record-breaking receiver to guarantee a starting spot for someone who hasn't played a down of college football yet.

I think we may have dodged a bullet with Robinson's dad.
