I’ve already said this, maybe even in this thread, but I’ll say it again… This is Chin‘s third year as a defensive coordinator. If you think he won’t learn anything else, then fire him. I, on the other hand, believe he will continue to improve. If you wanna argue the Nebraska shouldn’t be a training ground for new defensive coordinators, that’s fine. But he will get better.

Exactly. For crying out loud, the guy just got into town and is working with what he has. Give him a chance to recruit some more talent, coach up the players, and learn on the job.

These guys who think they're helping by holding Nebraska to a "higher standard" with unrealistic expectations are doing nobody any good.

Frost is our best and last chance to return to national prominence. You can't win with the same formula everywhere. That has been proven time and again with coaches who did great at one school but failed miserably at another.

We needed to hire someone who was here and an integral part of the program when we were great and who also has an intimate understanding of what it took to maintain it. There are two head coaches that fit that bill: Turner Gill and Scott Frost. Although I think Turner is a good man and coach, I don't think many would argue that he has the "it" factor that is needed to return the program to what it once was. Frost is a young head coach and has taken plenty of lumps this first year, but I still see that "it" factor every time he has a press conference. I hear in his voice that he has an unwavering confidence in what he is trying to do and where it will take us. He believes in what he is doing and will not give up until he gets it right. Most importantly, he truly loves his players and is going to do everything he can to help make them successful on the field and in life.

Obviously, this has been a rough year and mistakes have been made. We need to remember that he inherited a program that was at an all time low. Every coach since TO has left the program in worse shape in one way or another than his predecessor, culminating in the worst HC in program history whose milquetoast approach made us the softest team in the entire country last year, BAR NONE.

I'm not saying that Frost is above being criticized. However, justified criticism tempered with patience for the process is much different than unhinged rants that he's a horrible coach, that our DC should be fired, that our true freshman QB who didn't play his senior year of HS and who is on pace to be in the top 5 of total offense per game in program history is terrible, and many more asinine posts that have been made on this board.

If you truly want to see our program return to prominence, stop with the ridiculous tirades that do absolutely no one any good and be supportive of this process. Again, not saying one can't be critical, but let's not be hysterical. Just because Frost loves NU and this state doesn't mean that he'll put up with over-the-top ridiculousness forever. Remember, we almost lost TO to CU, and that was well before the days of these internet message boards.

I have great confidence that Frost will return us to national relevance, but the bottom line is that he is our last link to our glorious past and I believe that if he doesn't succeed the golden years of Husker football will be gone forever. If he does succeed, he can restart the machine that we once were and produce the next generation of coaches that will be able to carry on the flame when he is done. For that reason we should all give him as much time, support, and positive energy as we can to get this right.
Great post.

If you take a wait and see attitude that's generally what you're going to be doing... waiting and waiting and waiting... and it's never going to happen. "We have a bad defense now but maybe by year 3 it will be decent." Nope it usually doesn't work that way. I have a feeling the defense is always going to be holding this offense back as long as Chinander is here.

I think that this could be a major test for Frost. I don't think he's have to fire anybody so far. If the defense is still an issue in 3-4 years, will he be able to pull the trigger on a new DC?

Very well said! In particular to the ridiculous/negative posts that you speak of, usually it’s coming from newbies as a first post and cannot be taken seriously.

The majority of fans here know we’re trending in the right direction under HCSF and it will take time.

I'm guessing if you're old enough you were one who wanted to run McBride out on a rail? How about TO?
Yes I am old enough and no... to either of those ridiculous assumptions. Why would I want to run McBride Out???? I love Charlie McBride....and Tom Osborne was a one-of-a-kind coach....you're REALLY pulling at hypothetical stuff if you go so far back as T.O. If you are going to make your case...at least use viable realistic examples.

There wasn't a lot of love for Charlie in the late 80s and early 90s. From 89-93, NU was outscored 158-55 in bowl games. That wasn't corrected by firing Charlie, but getting more speed and athleticism on the defensive side of the ball. Five straight drubbings in a row, followed by a national title game appearance and then 3 titles in four years.
I'll begin to judge Chin when the players have another year of strength and conditioning, plus another year playing in the system.

Pretty sure that was for OldJar07, not you... your name came up first in the quote, but it was OldJar who he was responding to. OldJar has been highly critical in this thread of Chin, and as you likely saw, called the OP who was preaching patience a loser.

#2, #1, #1, #2, #1. Those are the final rankings of the teams we played in bowl games from 1989-1993. That's like playing only Alabama or Clemson in a bowl game for 5 straight years. How do you think even our best teams over the last 15 years would fair against that bowl schedule? Our 2009 and 2010 teams would have got their asses kicked if they played Alabama, and they wouldn't have held up nearly as well as Charlie McBride and the Huskers of 89-93 did.

People were displeased with the bowl performances of the D. I didn’t say it was rational.

The offense didn't hold up their end of the deal either in those games. National title teams have a habit of making defenses look bad. Just because we played several of them in that time period and weren't always competitive doesn't make our defense bad. We still had very good defenses during that time period.

That's what I'm saying. Most fans aren't rational. They expect progress every year, but if you're already good, it becomes a lot harder to actually have progress. That's why people are comparing Chinander and McBride like they're the same situation, but they're not.

Chinander hasn’t even had the chance to be like McBride yet. So that makes even more ridiculous to expect crazy results.

I have my reservations on him, but he hasn’t even gotten a chance to get his feet wet yet.

Couldn't you say the same about Diaco? Chinander's had pretty similar results to Diaco so far and look how much Diaco was derided.

McBride was a great coach and had good defenses his entire career here. I don't think Chinander is going to come close to approaching McBride's level of success. Hopefully Chinander can throw some good defenses on the field every so often and we can make a run at something special, but I think his ceiling is much lower than what McBride had.

How long has chinander been a DC? Not even 3 years. And this is his first in a P5 conference. And you already know how low his ceiling is? He is another Diaco? Wow...

There are a lot of posters ready to run him out of town. Give the guy a chance, more than just 7 games, more than a season even. He will continue to learn and get better.

I agree this defense has been a mess for a handful of years now. Way to many coaches coming and going. Nobody would have came and fixed this in 6 games. This team has got to have some continuity for the players.
