Much was made of this on talk radio. I get it and I don’t think this was an insult to the Blackshirt tradition. He feels he could be performing better during practice and games. It should just be left at that and nothing more.

I agree. That's exactly how I look at it too. It's still hopefully a sign of things changing at Nebraska.

Black Shirts, more like Black Squirts. Stille did the right thing. We're ranked 112th in the nation, giving up 450 yards per game.

2017 - 102nd
2016 - 21st
2015 - 71st
2014 - 48th

Seems we are running backwards...naked through the cornfields.

I actually didn't give it a thought when I first read about it. I figure that's between him and the coaching staff and he can make those decisions. Congrats to him for setting his standards high.

Wait...are you the UCF fan posing as a Husker fan or the Iowa fan posing as a Husker fan?

Or are you the super elusive Iowa fan posing as a UCF fan posing as a Husker fan?

Either way...it is awesome to see a fake fan post stats of a team they don't like. That basically makes you Mayor of Crazyville, right?

Blackskirts is the preferred insult. If you were a real Husker fan and not a troll, you'd know that.

Not a big deal, but he should have just taken it. Kinda makes his teammates look stupid when he turns it down.

I tend to disagree. He was clear in his rationale for turning it down. It wasn’t because the defense wasn’t up to standards. It was because he wasn’t up to standards.

I see your point, but think as long as he made it a personal thing, it isn’t showing up others who have received a shirt.

So again I ask, who decides if he ever gets one? Him or the staff? Is it an open invitation?

You got me. I am going to assume it is in his locker as long as he doesn’t lose it. When he hits his mark he will put it on. If he regresses, the coaches will remove it from his locker.

Kinda stupid that the staff awards them based on performance, instead of to the starters. It turns the tradition into a gimmick.

I agree that it breaks the tradition of the blackshirts. Does it make the team work harder? If so, maybe it’s a new tradition that will benefit the team.

Who cares? Is he going to get any less or more playing time because of it? Blackshirts are the guys that start or play a lot. Not going to change one iota of people in the stands calling players on the field blackshirts. If he has some personal standard where he doesn't think he earned it, that is between him and his coaches.

Lol I know. These idiots aren't fooling anyone. Might as well, stop being pussies. Post what they want to post under their own name and take the consequences.

He should probably just stay on the sideline for the first defensive play of the game. ;)

The bigger question I have is will the second-team defense continue to call themselves the "Killer Bees"? Would love to hear Sharp on the radio during a blowout say "Send in the Killer Bees." Like a radio victory cigar.

No. It's a gimmick. Motivation is earning the starting position and keeping it.

Was trying to be diplomatic. Guess I’ll be more direct. The coaches have chosen this as the most effective way to do it. They don’t give a crap who thinks it’s gimmicky or not.

I’m not gonna lose sleep over it, and I hope you don’t either.

This staff also respects the tradition more than any of the previous staffs and have a grasp of what it means. I'm fine with how they are operatin.

Do we even know what blackshirts are? You’re a starter so in the traditional sense so you’re a blackshirt. When did it become an award? I always thought by wanting that blackshirt you wanted the starting role. These days we seem to have all sorts of requirements for deserving a blackshirt..

good point, no one knows now. If it's just a matter of being a starter for Nebraksa's D, then yeah, by tradition, all starters get one. If it means something more than just being a starter, maybe not.

Exactly, and when individual players start to create their own standard the definition and the tradition becomes even more convoluted.

LOL, what do you think, clueless?

About the blackshirt tradition?

The coach sets the standard. If the coach awards a scholarship, the player doesn't get to say nope, I need to pay for my education this week because I didn't give my best effort in the classroom. Accept the acknowledgement and award and get on with it. Don't make yourself bigger than the tradition.

This is a message board. Don't discourage discussion because Scott Frost chooses do something. You think that I believe I have some way of influencing Scott Frost by posting on a message board? It was stupid when Pelini did it and it's stupid when Scott Frost does it. I won't lose any sleep, but will feel just fine stating my opinion on a message board.

Exactly, I wouldn't equate declining a black shirt temporarily to declining a scholarship worth $35k per year or decline being a starter, it's just an award (meant to motivate players) for a team ranked 111th in total D.
