he has 2 legitimate B10 players (Berry and Gifford) and a bunch of role players at best around them. Maybe 2 solid Defensive linemen, maybe 1 starting safety

The biggest indictment of talent on this defense is the 2 holding calls against our opponents on pass plays in 20 games!!!! That covers two coaching staffs, and the lack of pass rush for 3 complete years. As much as it looks to be bad officiating against us, it is likely the fact we have had such bad pass rushers for the 2-3-4 years. And the front 7 is vastly more important than the back 4. We had years where we had one corner who could cover, but we had 50 sacks and an average defense.

We'll never have a good defense under Chinander. We just have to hope our offense is so good we can outscore everyone, like UCF did last year, and Oregon did under Chip Kelly.
They said the same thing about Charlie McBride.

We gave up almost 500 yards to the 109th ranked offense in the country. But we got the big turnover when we needed it. At least Husker Football will never be boring under this staff.

Wow. You must have missed the late 80's.
Late 80's huh? From 1986-1990 we never gave up more than 270 yards average for the year. We never gave up more than 20 ppg on average. We were a vastly better defense than anything Chinander has put on the field.

Give Chin a year to get some pass rushers and defensive backs. Then we will see if he can make it!

Could that possibly be related to the fact that most of our opponents in that timeframe averaged 15 passes a game and that the rules were not all skewed to promote production and scoring???? The 80s defenses were all average to above average sans 84. Cost NU a title in 83.

That's a very small part of it compared to the fact that we were a vastly better team in all areas back then compared to what we are today. We routinely finished in the top 10 and were probably averaging around a 10-2 record. Right now we're a 1-6 team...

Just because our fan base is stupid and thought we had a bad defense in the 80s, it doesn't make it true. The game didn't change that much that holding opponents under 300 yards a game wasn't good back then. It's still the same damn game.

The game isn’t the same at all..... yes they were vastly more talented.

The only knock on Charlie was getting elite talent on the backend and (to a certain extent) LBs. Once he did that, lights-out. He just needed to get new personnel. He always had a great defensive mind.

Chin ia whole other story.

Enjoy the victory!

They said the same thing about Charlie McBride.
They did? I don’t remember that. I remember criticism about having slower players in the defensive backfield and he corrected that. But you could be right. I do think the concern surrounding Chinander is warranted. I hope he gets it figured out, because Frost won’t replace him. I’m the meantime, I think we continue to give up big plays, yardage, and points. Just win, baby!

I actually wasn't being generous enough earlier. We were averaging right at giving up 15 ppg during the late 80s, were ranked in the top 10 multiple times, and didn't go below 20th. That's similar to what Michigan and Alabama has been doing lately. We had very good defenses in the 80's.

They're idiots then. We always had good defenses under McBride. Chinander is nowhere close.

McBride's defenses got routinely embarrassed by FSU & MIami in bowl games and often didn't hold up against OU or CU (when CU was good). Many fans, myself included, thought he was a weak link in the coaching staff. Weird how he got better when Trev Alberts, the Peter brothers, Grant Wistrom, etc. showed up.

more like 2 All Big 10 honorable mention players, but I understand your point.

Lol, yes very weird. Point made.
