Last year we gave up 55 ppg over the last 4 games....we added a new safety, freshman corner, juco lb who is hurt, and have lost a starting NT....in the first 5 games we are giving up 39 a game, against opponents with a combined record of 21-6. 39 ppg is terrible but I think most of us were doing yard work last fall and underestimated how bad the team was, especially the D...

That's progress, about a 30% improvement in points allowed, but its still depressing. If your wife loses 30 pounds but is still 70 pounds overweight you probably aren't going to get a boner just yet because even though the scale moved in the right direction, she still regularly snacks on cinnamon rolls and candy bars even though her diet coach is trying hard to break that habit. A little less obese is still obese.

Nevertheless, you take any positive where you can find it.

So your barometer of success is Diaco D after the team gave up? Look up Diaco D for the first five games. And Diaco is terrible. 39 points is god awful.

Good point

Edit - For those that didn't want to look up the Diaco D for the first 5 games.

2017 - 334 ypg - 24 ppg
2018 - 438 ypg - 39 ppg

Building size strength and depth in the trenches is critical going forward. And those big strong dudes need to have some agility to go with it. We’ll see what Frost, Duval, Dawson and Austin can put together with the pieces they have and with any new pieces they can find.
I see it as being one of the more difficult challenges Scott Frost is facing. Finding new bodies is tough for those trenches since high schoolers need time to grow, so we could be waiting. Guys on the roster will get stronger and better- that’s a start. Tony Fair, Desmond Bland and any other JUCO linemen they can land need to pan out for us.

Are we also going to compare opponents as well ?

Only one good offense and team (Oregon ) was one of the first 5 games compared to the first 5 games in 2018.

Watch Diaco be a huge success at OU if hired.
Didn't Diaco basically say our players suck and aren't smart? (in his weird Diaco speak) We all thought he was just a ****** coach..... Maybe there was more true to that than we thought.

ok let's compare common opponents.

Purdue 2017 24 pts 363 yards
Purdue 2018 42 pts 516 yards

Wisconsin 2017 38 pts 466 yards
Wisconsin 2018 41 pts 533 yards

Let’s wait till the end of the year..

Purdue will be better this year and Wisconsin is still Wisconsin

Honestly I don't think I ever listened to a press conference of his. Enjoyed reading the translations and interpretations on here!!

Sounded like it generally a waste of good oxygen.

And we don't know if this team will roll over toward the end of the year when there is nothing to play for and give up even bigger numbers.

This is a perfect analogy.

Honas Injury killed us this game. If we are running a 3-4, we need guys who are either going to get stops and or apply pressure. He can make stops. I think he is the best tackler on the team. Without him Young is our only option. We may just not have the right wives in the game.
As for our line. STILLE got owned every snap. K. Davis did a decent job when he came in for him, and he saved a touchdown by tackling Taylor at the line of scrimmage on that screen pass. That would have went to the house if it wasn't for that tackle. He should have started but I'm assuming he was in the doghouse for getting the roughing the passer penalty in the Purdue game.

You mean like last year...

Hope I’m right but the youth on the defense won’t give up like last year and end the season with 4-5 wins or take games down too the wire..

I might add SF won’t let this team quit either compared to last year..

Defense is in a bad place right now. We seem to have a ton of injuries on that side of the ball. Stolt, hate to say it, but when hasn't he been injured? Deontre Thomas, injured. Honas, out for the season. I have my suspicions Dedrick may have something akin to Tre Bryant with his knees or hips. He just does not have any juice and hasn't for the past year or so. Tyrin Ferguson, injured. This is a HUGE chunk of our front seven two-deep.

First and foremost, Nebraska needs more talent and better coaching on defense. However, even after that, I don't think the defense and offense is very complimentary right now. After the 1st quarter, I think Nebraska had what, 2 minutes of possession? Those three and outs are killers, but it also is a problem (overall) when the offense scores in 60 seconds as the defense still hasn't caught its breath. I think Frost is a great offensive mind, but he will need to find a way to make the time of possession more even for the sake of the defensive side of the football. I'm not sure if that means sacrificing a few offensive possessions to a slower pace and get a few first downs, but otherwise here in the Big West, it's going to be hard to beat teams that have the ability to control the clock like Wisconsin, Iowa.

Yes, I meant like last year, that is what we were comparing. 2017 to 2018.

If only Scott Frost could control a team rolling over.

The defense is not good or not buying in. You can hope that youth on the defense won't give up, but unfortunately I don't see a lot of youth. I see inexperience in some spots, but not a lot of youth.

I never said the defense was good in fact they’d not even average. Youth is Deontal Williams,Dicaprio Bottle,Caleb Tannor and Damian Daniels.

I’m with many that still has the verdict out about how good Coach Chins is as a defensive coord but I would like to give the staff some time to recruit new blood in the next few years..

One would have hoped that even under a completely different staff the 2nd year in the 3-4 you would see some progress.

To that point you have had guys especially in the DL and DB areas that have see a revolving door of coaches. Some DB's Williams and Reed especially have had something like 6 different position coaches. It has to be hard for them.
