How does a league force its teams to play 162 games, then when there is a tie...force the teams to play another game as the tiebreaker? The game with by far the most data should be able to create quantitative tie-breakers...like...um...all other sports.

Today's and tomorrow's games aren't tiebreakers, they are wild card play-in games. Started about 5-6 years ago, I think. Keeps more teams competing later into the season both for the second wild card spot and in division races (playing for the difference between a one-game playoff as a wild card vs. straight to a 7-game series as a division champ).

In NFL terms, it's having to play in the wild card round vs. a bye to the divisional round. However, it's with 5 teams instead of 6, so the wild card games ostensibly look like "tiebreaker" games.

IDK, I think it's kinda cool. If you're a die hard fan, they already have your attention, but if you're me, you'll get my eye balls for this game, it's more exciting than a "normal" first round game. Everyone knows what you have to do to avoid playing that one game, so freaking do it, or suffer the consequences. I love it.

Yesterday’s games were tie breakers. The Dodgers and Rockies were tied for the NL West and the Cubs and the Brewers were tied for the NL Central. It just so happened that the loser of both games both became the Wild Card Teams for the NL. But it doesn’t always happen that way. The Wild Card game is essentially the “play in” game. Today is the NL Wild Card tomorrow is the AL Wild Card.

Edit: totally misread the post...o_O

Baseball is boring as hell.
My least favorite sport.

It is a little bizarre to have the four best teams playing yesterday, two of those 4 playing today, while number 5 gets 4 days off and the number 3 seed.

Monday's game bro....I know about the wild card shiite...which is still stupid...play a damn series. If the team is good enough for a one game playoff, play a 5 game series and give the division winners some rest, or some actually benefit for winning a division...Baseball is stupid and dying, and I played baseball very successfully.

So you would rather they settle it by some sort of criteria than actually settling it on the field?

Then why play 162 games...every other sport uses head to head tiebreakers or some other calculation. Plus how can a team tied for the best record in the league be forced to play a tiebreaker while teams with much worse records sit out.

The post season is the only thing I watch. 162 games. Hard to take 162 games seriously. The teams don't give 100% effort until the post season

Loved having two game 163s yesterday. That was awesome. The teams that won the season series head to head had home field advantage, which is fair. Decide it on the field.

I’ve grown to like the single-game wild-card. Teams that win their division essentially get a “bye”. The wild-card teams have to face a sudden-death situation just to make the “tournament”.

They could get a group of people together and have them decide who the four best teams are in baseball once the season is over and pick them to play in the playoff. Hell they could even say that you don't have to win your division and you could still get in. This is clearly the best method since it works so well in D-1 football.Sick

They just need to get rid of divisions and go back to leagues. Top 6 get in 1&2 get byes while the other four play a 5 game series with one night off for travel.

30 games against the other league and 116 against your league.

Maybe have sportswriters take a vote on who should make the post-season? You may be on to something. That way, we could disregard the actual results of the games and put popular teams in the post-season.
We could even keep out the division winners sometimes and let teams that finish second in their division get in instead, that way if a team like Auburn, I mean Toronto, wins the division but most fans would rather watch Alabama, I mean the Yankees play then everybody would be happy.

Competitively, this would be better but travel would be worse and attendance less so it's not going to happen.

Wild Card should be a Best of 3 series

I agree because baseball should be decided on a series. SPs are the king. So if a wildcard has a lights out pitcher, the one game really favors them.

However the problem with a 3 game series, is it kills a teams rotation for the next round and gives their opponent a heavy advantage. So game 1 in the Divisional Series, the #1 teams will have a completely rested pen & pitching their #1, but their opponent would be pitching their 3rd or 4th starter with a depleted pen.

Love baseball. Kind of annoyed by some modern developments like shifts. BUT, it's a hell of a lot better than the charade that barely resembles football these days.

1) The WC should be a best of three series.
2) Glad the Cubs got knocked out. I smile every time I think of all the hipsters with crappy beards and skinny jeans having to put away their Kris Bryant jerseys for the year.
3) Need the Yankees to lose tonight.
4) NBA/Hockey/Racing are all much worse than MLB.

Can someone please explain the point of a regular season in the NBA? We all know only 3 maybe 4 teams can win the title, and let’s be more honest, only two can win the title.

If you want drama, the element of surprise, then the NBA is not for you. If you want predictable TV, then you will love the NBA.

Only 3 times in the leagues history has a seed lower then a 3 seed won the title? over 70 years... So for Wildcards win all the time in the NFL & MLB.
