But I think we have a lot of people in this state and on this board that like football, maybe even love football, but have very little football knowledge. I understand that the majority of people on this board love Nebraska as much or more as I do (saying most because there’s obviously some trolls). I also understand that watching what’s been happening to us on and off for the past 14 years is hard. (I say 14 because I think firing Solich when we did was a mistake. F*** Steve Pedersen)
What I don’t understand is people blaming the coaches and saying our program is dead and that we shouldn’t even try to hire top coaches and should hire mediocrity. Shame on you and anyone that thinks like that and frankly, gtfo. Everyone wants us to get back to dominance but it’s a lot more than just on the field. Everything’s got to be stripped completely to the studs and built back up again. We finally have an admin in place that gives a crap. We have coaches on staff that from the top to the bottom genuinely care about the players and their well being. And they want to win! They didn’t come here to lose!
We have some talent on this team. Enough talent to win 8 or even 9 games on this schedule this year. But talent doesn’t mean anything when you don’t have heart. When you don’t hold yourself and your teammates accountable. When Dismuke picked the ball and it got called back, what happened right after? Lamar Jackson jawing at the Purdue sideline and dancing around..WHY?! You hear the term “have some dawg in you”..he has no “dawg” in him. That’s why. When you continually get beat on every deep route..which he has for 2 years..(correct me if I’m wrong) you’re a liability. He needs to put his head down and get to work instead of jawing off and dancing around. We have kids on this team that will fight but you also have some upperclassmen that are unhappy with the change. Why? Probably because they actually have to work hard for a change. That’s a cancer. But that’s the reality of our program at this point. It’s not the coaches. There’s isn’t a coaching staff in the country that came into a worse situation than ours. Sure, it sucks to be 0-4 but in all reality we should be 3-1. We’ve beat ourselves in 3 of the 4 games we’ve played. That’s on the players. We finally mixed it up this week and started weeding it out and I think that will continue to happen.
Football is more than just the x’s and o’s. We’ve seen what the x’s and o’s of this scheme can do when it works and when the right things are in place. Anyone who didn’t think this was going to be a painful year is naive. We’re we better than 5-7 in ‘15? Yes. Were we better than 4-8 last year? Yes. And we’ll be better than whatever record we end up with this year. Our team learned to quit under Riley. We learned how to lose and how to accept it. We’re learning how to fight again. The wins will come. We just have to be all in as a fan base and supportive.
