What to do with Martinez

Been thinking on this. How does Frost handle the situation?
Can sit him against Troy, thinking we should easily win this one. Get him well rested and healed for Michigan and BIG10 play.

Or does he play him in at attempt to get as many rep and and much practice as possible to iron out the kinks. Plus getting that first win under the belt for everyone would be huge. Going 0-2, plus a loss against Troy wouldn't be the best from an emotional stand point for player, coaches, and fans.

Troy is no pushover and not going to be an automatic win without Martinez. I think if he is able to play Frost will play him. If we have the game in hand at any point, he will sit him the rest of the game.

We don’t beat Michigan in Ann Arbor with him. Furthermore he is going to get hit often and very hard in that game.

We should be able to beat Troy without him and Purdue is a must win. Make sure he is 100% for Purdue.

he has 3+ quarters of college experience, but clearly a player. If we want improvement to a level that will be competitive during conference play....if he can, play him if .

I lean toward this, but if he is cleared to play in the Big House, he will play.

If he is cleared to play he plays. You don't not play a guy because he might get injured. I don't care if it is at home vs. Troy or on the road against Michigan. Every game is winnable when it starts. Upsets happen, typically not when you are playing a walk on back up QB on the road though.

Again, my opinion!

Can play and should play are two different things. We have seen this in the past with Armstrong. While he could do some things, he clearly couldn’t do them all. In those cases, you are limiting what the player can do naturally and therefore exposing them to increased injury.

Agreed. Don't get cute with this thing. If he's cleared, he starts. If we're up big and the game is in-hand, then consider pulling him.

Cleared to me means that the medical staff believes his chances of injury are not significantly greater than they were before the CU game.

Want to clarify - if he is a 100% he plays - completely agree

If he less than 100% - say ~80% I would rather sit him and let him him be better prepared the next week. A big part of his game is his running ability - him with a bad knee is similar to a pocket passer playing with an injured throwing arm

If the doctors clear him, he will play. That is all I'm saying. % healthy doesn't factor into it to me.

I actually think we can win in the Big House. It's kind of Ironic, Frost's 1st year at UCF he had to play at Michigan and here we are in year 1 here he has to go play at the Big House again. Frost will have a game plan as he has already played them before. All he has to do is look at game film from both the UCF game 2 years ago and these 1st 3 weeks.

Just because a doctor clears him to play doesn't mean he should. We shouldn't need him against Troy and he probably shouldn't play.

If a doctor says that no further damage can be done and he is cleared to play, he will play. Should play or will play are two totally different arguments. My opinion is that he will play if cleared. If you want to argue with someone who is saying he should play, be my guest. But that isn't me.

I say we cut him. I like quarter backs that don’t get hurt.

I don’t understand this. UCF absolutely got destroyed in that game when Frost had a years worth of film on Harbaugh at Michigan and Harbaugh had none on Frost. Now Harbaugh has film on Frost as well. That game had nothing to do with film - it came down to UCF being undermanned as well as being in the first year with new schemes. A situation I suspect Nebraska will find itself in this year as well.

I know this is a fan message board and we like to opine about what a coach will do with an injured quarterback, but I, for one, simply trust that Frost has the best interests of the short and long term view of the program and this young man in mind. He will make the decision he feels is best. We hired him to make these decisions. I have faith that he will do what is right.

Right, I think most here trust Frost will do what is best for the Martinez and the team.

IMO he'll be less than 100% still this week and they'll start Bunch in the hope that Martinez isn't needed this week. If Bunch can handle business, they'll be run-heavy and notch their W and let that knee have another week to heal up.

If there’s a shred of doubt in Martinez and the coaches about him not being 100%, he should sit it out. Troy will be a dog fight but Nebraska can win with Bunch.

Two factors. 1. At what percentage of recovery is Martinez physically superior to Bunch - i.e., is a 75% Martinez better than a 100% Bunch?

2. What is the risk of further injury if he plays?

Michigan will be difficult to beat on the road with Martinez at 100%. If he is at 75 or 80%, save him for the B1G West games the next two weeks.

if Martinex is able to move around with a brace on that knee then there are ways to play him with very little possibility of further injury. If not and the knee is weakened at all injury possibilities are much greater than normal.

1. tell martinez , when he see's big dumb linemen and or linebackers in traffic, he needs to slide. unless like a championship is on the line. he's big enough to handle db's (one at a time in the open field)

Martinez needs reps. We're at the stage with this football program that you can't have him sit despite being hurt. He needs the reps.
