Sounds like the QB competition broke late. Gebbia likely had a pretty good idea of where he stood before the weekend.
From the article - Still, Verduzco is happy with the guys he has. Particularly Martinez, who really began to win the starting job one week before they told him, Verduzco said.
"Once he started getting his stroke back, particularly within the last two weeks, once he got that cranked up, he was ripping the ball really well and that maybe was the deciding factor in relationship to his athleticism and all that sort of business that goes along with that," Verduzco said.

If this is the case then good deal. Means Martinez flat out won the battle and wasn’t just handed the job because he was the better fit. Martinez will be something special in Frosts offense and with skill position players we have and coming, we should have a very dangerous offense.

Also:

The absence of Gebbia, though, will change the game plan. Verduzco said Nebraska might be a bit more "judicious" with designed quarterback runs now that there isn't as much depth behind Martinez.

Yeah pure speculation on my part but sounds like after he told his inner circle they said BS your transferring and not gonna be a backup... it wouldnt be the first time a dad or someone else had their hand in a situation like this.. anyways it dorsnt matter now hes gone and we need to support our team and the boys that are going into battle with them..GBR

Well of course he's gonna praise him, you have to at this point.

Just once I wanna see a coach be like, "He sucks, man. It's miles between him and the starter, I mean if he has to play for us we're really f***ed."
LOL, so true.

Well, that should end some of the speculation by some of the posters on here.

1. Adrian won the job, it wasn’t handed to him, duh. His arm apparently was showing some zip the last two weeks and that was part of the difference.

2. They will use judgement in running Adrian. Another shocker

What else is left to speculate about? I am sure there is something.

Because if that wasn't the case Verduzco would totally say that right? You damn well better trot out there and act like this was your plan all along and you have 143% confidence in your starter. Too late to change your ture.

"Yeah, boy we really have our pants down on this one. We thought we could use Tristan as our fall-back chick while Adrian got it figured out even though he probably deserved to start and boy did that come back and screw us!"

"I said to Scott, 'Did you f***ing know he could still transfer? I didn't know! I thought it was that our classes have started, they're saying it's other schools' classes?' and Scott was like, 'I know! We are so f***ed if Adrian ends up sucking! I thought we dragged it out long enough!' It was kinda funny but I guess it's kinda not, you know?"

"We were gonna have a good laugh with Tristan on his way out the door in December like, 'LOL did you really think we would ever give the job to a kid who isn't real fast?!' and he'd laugh and I'd laugh and it'd be a great story someday. But yeah...he's gone and we're not going to be laughing if Adrian gets hurt. Hey don't print that. Are you recording? Can you delete that? Where are you going? Hey! HEY!!! DON'T PRINT THAT!!!!!!"

Maybe not "he sucks", but I think if we are willing to read between the lines, we can figure it out. For instance, Ruud on Avery Roberts: "He's a smart kid and he's worked hard at it, but his movements aren't where they need to be and his conditioning's not where it needs to be, so the summer's going to be huge for him." Ruud called him out several times for not being in shape and implying he loafed. You have to keep in mind, Frost learned from TO who could speak volumes by saying little or even nothing.

You can say something like that at the end of spring about your LB competition between 4-6 guys when you're trying to motivate somebody to change his habits over the summer. You don't say it game week about your #2 QB when there is zero chance that your true freshman walk-on #3 is going to pass him for that job and there basically is no #4 guy.

Andrew Bunch isn't going to change the kind of player he is between the Monday Gebbia quit and another 4 practices before the game.

Not saying they're equivalent ball players, but Bunch and McKenzie Milton had the same rivals ranking (5.5) coming out of HS. Bunch ran a no huddle system is HS. He is what he is, but I suspect he is really enjoying his chance at NU and if need be, he can utilize the offensive weapons at his disposal.

I thought Bunch looked pretty good in the spring game, better than Gebbia actually. I figured Tristan was feeling the pressure and was tight. Bunch seemed to run the O pretty naturally and he was playing with the 2s and 3s against the 1s and 2s defense. He seemed to make good decisions and he had that nice TD pass. I was surprised when Frost said in fall camp Martinez and Gebbia were pulling away from Bunch.

They better be more judicious. Anyone who thinks this doesn't change the play calling is living more dangerously than I'm comfortable doing.

But, but, but...wasn't Ryker (Barney) Fyfe a 4 or 5-star, ready to blossom into the type of talent that would take us to the pinnacle of college football, even if he was an INT machine?

Did I read somewhere earlier that "dad" poked his nose into this competition?

After listening to this video, and reading an article on 247, there's no doubt in my mind that either his dad or someone else got to him and said "You're coming home!!!

"Verduzco said Bunch compares favorably with where Noah Vedral was last season as a true freshman at UCF.

“Bunch is going to get more reps. The more reps he gets the better he’s going to get. He’s got a good gun, he’s athletic, he’s intelligent. I suspect he’s going to get better with every day of reps."

How can anyone question if he won the battle?

I think giving the job to Gebbia is more roster management and ceding to the upperclassman to prove himself, but both are in a new system, and the best guy won the job. GBR

MM at UCF was a career maker for Coach V. Now, we will see how good he is. I hope he, and his N pupils do well.

I saw that too, and the 180 Gebbia did from Saturday to Sunday (according to this article) smacks of parent intervention.

I remember thinking that after the spring game, also.

Since when do people believe a 20 year old kid over an entire coaching staff who preaches to do everything with integrity? In any other transfer situation, the coach's word would mean a lot more than the player's. Was it just a bad fit, did the kid have character issues? 99 times out of a 100 the coach would be believed before the player. Why is this time different? I think people are just trying to rationalize that they thought Gebbia was a good kid and there's no way a good kid would screw over his teammates like he did. That's why it must be the coaches fault and not Gebbia's. It's truly amazing how much people have to twist the story to fit their preconceived notions about what kind of kid he was.

This sounds a little more like it. Not sure what thread it was in or whoever posted. But that poster said frostmessedF it up and didn't tell gebbia to which I responded, that would be Coach V job to do as QB coach. Since he was the one who told Martinez he won the starting position, then he would also be the one to tell Gebbia.

I'm more worried about our 3rd string option. How much of the offense has he absorbed in a few weeks?
