2019 Recruiting Class

With the losses in the past week of Barnett, Watt, Bryant, Roberts, Jackson, and recruit Grayson, our current class size (with 3 over signing) is at 26.

Apparent Needs:
1 RB
3 WR
4 OL
1 S
1 CB/ATH
1 LS (probably a walk-on)

Getting another good OLB and CB would be nice, but would require some further attrition beyond the 3 already still needed.

I am working on my chart right now. I believe we will be losing one more guy in the next few days. I'll see if we agree on those numbers. At first glance, its pretty close to the same

The hardest thing to predict is the RB/WR since the positions are semi-intertwined, and I’m not sure how to classify the Duck-R position. I feel like we could probably take 1 less WR, and instead use that at either CB, S, or OLB.

On my chart I have another 10 sophomore and junior players I could see ‘moving on’ in the next year or two, but we don’t really want to get a giant class this year necessarily because it sounds like we have some great recruiting momentum for the 2020 class and it would be nice to make it fairly large as well.

Going by the scholarship distribution chart sans Tre, Frost players are 33/85. Almost 40% roster turnover before Frost coaches a down of FB. After the next class is signed, that % will be around 65%. Serious personnel change and Frost and the staff.

So youre saying we are unlikely to need any D-line? I mean, I'd tend to agree, as we've been recruiting it fairly well and we have that big *** NT coming in from JUCO for 2019.

What about TE? Also good?

For D-Line we have Fair and Piper for NT (Piper could also potentially be a DE), and we have Newsom and Nelson as other DEs. So we actually have 4 commited on the D-Line right now.

For TE, we currently have 4 on scholarship, with Stoll being the oldest as a Sophomore and assuming Jurgens stays. But there is also Legrone and McGriff who I see as eventual TEs as well. The offense also only typically uses 1, and its more of a hybrid role, so having many more than 4 or 5 isn’t really needed. We would obviously take Hickman, though, as he seems to be a priority for the staff.

We will sign at least one more DE, hopefully Ty Robinson. Also, I read that Frost wants Ethan Piper to play offensive line rather than defense. So I wouldn't be surprised if we added a couple more defensive linemen.

We will also likely sign 3 more DBs. We are the favorites for Taiwan Mullen, Javin Wright, and Jamel Starks.

We'll also take Hickman at TE if he wants in.

Nelson will start as an OLB

Robinson the obvious want at DE

Damien Jackson is being trained and will get the opportunity at LS

I think Nelson will be an OLB.

Think your over on WR and under on DB's. We will also take a class of more than 25. So In my opinion and with NO inside knowledge:

1RB (Robinson)
2WR (Williams, ?)
3-4OL (Olaseni, Ike, Benhart & Vimahi)
3-4DB (Mullen, Wright, Mayo & Starks)
1DE (Robinson)
1TE (Hickman)

These names could obviously change, especially if we have a better than expected year. Likewise, this list is subject to the whims of a bunch of 18 year old kids.

I could see us take 2 less wide receivers than I had, and add an extra CB/S. My OP was listed more as ‘needs’, but I agree we would definitely take Robinson and Hickman, though neither position at this time is really a need. Piper was recruited by Chin and Ruud, and right now is projected by most on the DL.

Weinmaster and Mazour will be on scholarship next year it sounds like as well. So right now class size is back down to 24.

Gotta think they put heavy emphasis on DB and OLB. They still don't exactly speak glowingly of their defensive backs.

I agree that I'd rather have those recruits at the CB position. We already have plenty of talent at the WR position. We need an influx of talent at the CB position. Plus, it's a lot easier to find serviceable walk on WR's than it is CB's. There's more to it than just having an ideal ratio of numbers that you can't deviate from. If you're talent deficient at a position, I think you need to recruit more numbers at that position to find a starter quality player.

With as much attrition as we had this year and a lot of other names I can see being on that list by fall next year, I think we'd have room for 28.

I agree with you on a lot of this. I agree the coaches can/should deviate from the ‘ideal ratios’, especially when taking some can’t miss prospects, but at the same time they don’t really want to backload our roster or sign too many at any one position. That is how we get depth issues, and that is how the class numbers and overall experience on the team gets skewed so heavily.

One example is TE. I agree with most and obviously the coaches that Chris Hickman is an automatic take. However, if he commits, he gives us 5 TEs that will all be under JRs at a position where there is normally only 1 on the field. That means ideally you would want about 4 on the roster. We also have McGriff and Legrone who could easily project to TE. Say that were to happen, then you have 7 TEs all JR or under and you either need position changes or attrition.
