My father was a successful man. He was confident and sure. He was a man of purpose. He was in charge of an organization. He lost that job because it was cheaper to hire a younger person. He couldn't get anything in the same field. My parents list their home cars and lifestyle in a board meeting.

My father spent no time being angry,he moved on. He couldn't find anything in his field. He was overqualified. He worked as a laborer and made extra money cleaning the bathrooms at the end of his shift. He worked his *** off. He ended up falling off a ladder and breaking his neck, he was in his late fifties. I was away in the military during all of this. I really never knew how bad things were.

After my Dad healed up, he sold cars and did whatever he could to make money. He would work from sunup until sundown. My Dad eventually had to retire, but he had nothing for all his years of work. They made bad financial decisions. My parents tried to support adult children with kids on social security. Another bad decision.

My Dad tried to hang himself in the garage because of money and failure. He was found and survived. I nor my siblings had any idea. It's easy to get wrapped up in your lives. Don't take a proud Dad's exclamation that everything is good.

My dad was a farmer we really never had much money but wouldn't trade it for anything either mom or dad even both would be home when us kids got home from school he also was a proud man and the farm crisis in the late 70s early 80s ended his farming days paying 16% interest didn't work out. He passed away from dementia in 2013 which was difficult watching him slip away

totally agree we get busy in our own lives and we either take what our parents say as truth or since they appear to be doing ok we just figure they are. I had a parent that decided not to take medicine that was important none of us knew of this next thing they have a stroke which they never recover

I am sorry. I understand pride, but it can hurt. When I became older, I realized money is a tool. It is a weapon or shield. It is a shovel too more wealth. Your Pops sounds like a great guy. Money isn't ****, unless you don't have money. Sad. My Dad will never have to worry about money again.
