OT:Dog bitten or stung

My 13 yr old Chow got bit or stung by something. Probably happened Friday sometime, didn't notice till later that night when she yelped after giving her a treat and noticed the right side of her muzzle was swelled up. (She had been acting normal to this point) Gave her two Benadryl to knock her out, took her to vet Next morning. She was in pain, can't believe she let the vet lift her muzzle up 3X to look without reacting other than a yelp. Giving her a cocktail of drugs, back to her old self. Swelling has already gone down a lot already. Easy $100 bucks.

Anybody else have this happen?

Didn't you vet have any idea? I would surmise that it's not a bad tooth. Do you live in a city or farm acreage? My guess would be either a common spider bite or wasp/bee sting. On the farm could be a lot more thing, like a thorn, bumblebee just a few of many

Vet seemed to think spider or a sting. She does have 2 fractured teeth with one on the right side. Vet lifted up her muzzle 3X to look and the tooth looked good, just had her check up a month ago too. (We had X-rays and a dental cleaning done late last year) so we've been keeping an eye on it. I live next to a corn field, so kinda in the country or on the edge. I put down plenty of bug killer every year, but always something crawling around out there. I have plenty of flowering S&%t in the front yard, nothing in the back specifically to not attract beez and what not since that's where the dogs hang out.

Growing up when I was a young teen I remember our dogs getting stung by a hive of bumblebees I got stung a couple times they didn't get sick but they sure had a few places on there body that swelled up pretty good they weren't to active for a couple of days but then back to normal, just one of those things that happens growing up on the farm

Our vet gave her a shot and said if it happens again give her Benadryl....she has since been bit once more and her sister once also and Benadryl does the trick.

Damn poor dogs! Good thing your on top of it. I'm gonna have to put some in my bag I got for the dogs when I'm out & about with them. My dog got Benadryl, Rimadyl and Tramadol for 3 days = $100 later. I might have to tell her to man up a bit next time

The vets pass Rimadyl and Tramadol out like candy for dogs. I train dogs and used to work at a boarding facility, you look at a dog wrong and they're like, "Here's $250 worth of antibiotics, pain meds and heavy narcotics." I don't know if they do it because they don't wanna deal with pissy owners coming back and complaining that they didn't do enough or if it's just a cash grab.

FWIW you can get the meds at Costco or other major pharmacies so you don't have to pay the vet's mark-up, but you may have to ask them specifically to write you the script and not fill it.

Benadryl probably is more than fine for a bite or a sting. If it's something venomous obviously that's a different story and you need to get them to a vet right away. But I've seen people cost themselves thousands because they get bent out of shape if their dog gets a scratch or doesn't eat for a day. I'm like, "Do you go to the ER if you get a scratch? Clean it and put some Neosporin on it."

I'm surprised a copperhead bite isn't worse than that for a dog. My sister was bitten on the foot once by a copperhead and her lower leg was a mess for a quite a while.

We dropped 15K on the last pooch over 3 years after she got cancer the first time and blah blah, etc. Would do again but glad I have the insurance now.

If you can find a small town vet that does both large and small animals most of the time there way more reasonable than a big city vet who just does pets

I was surprised to but my Vet wasn't the least bit concerned about the bite. My dogs are part heeler/cattle dogs and weigh about 75 pounds each.

Back in the late 80's when I lived in Columbus Jim Pillen was my vet and had a small office in town...he has came a long way since then
