Just rewatched the UCF-Auburn game. I didn’t see any evidence that going fast wore out Auburn. Maybe going fast gave AU some problems, but the announcers didn’t really mention the no huddle at all as an advantage. More than anything, I think it was the UCF defense that was the big difference. People are thinking that the no huddle offense will be an advantage. We ran it under Bo and I don’t think it was a advantage then.

The offensive scheme and containing the QB seem to be the thing that gave Auburn the biggest problems.

Depends on what type of no huddle...

Do you run a no huddle that snaps the ball asap or do you line the offense up on the line and act like you are going to snap the ball, making the defense play more of a base defense if they think you will snap it right away?

Frost's offense at UCF had a very average number of snaps per game IIRC. Not a clue on time of snap though...

It seemed to me that they got to the line of scrimmage and then looked to the sideline for a call. That’s what they did in the Spring game. I really hadn’t followed UCF during the season but watched their last two games and their defense was awful. Not so in the Auburn game. I dint know if that was bad Auburn offense or great UCF defense, but the bowl team was completely different from what I saw in those two earlier games.

They had been fine until those last two games. Probably were beat up some.

That's what 35 days of prep for one team will do for you.

I’m wondering why 35 days of prep didn’t help Auburn, who beat both Alabama and Georgia...
Exactly. The time between the end of the regular season and a New Year's bowl levels the playing field by allowing both teams to heal those nagging injuries you have to "play through" during the season. It helps both teams. It also gives you plenty of time to practice for your opponent. It helps both teams. Conversely, sometimes a long time off can create rust and loss of focus. It can hurt both teams.

UCF beat Auburn straight-up. There were no gimmicks and there was no lucky bounce of the ball or bad calls from the refs hurting Auburn. Auburn was a very, very, good team last year. Damn near made it into the playoff. And, as you point out, they beat Alabama and Georgia. And UCF beat them.

There should be no doubts about whether or not UCF was legit or about the amazing coaching job of Frost and his staff. If some trolling Hawknut fan comes on here and implies otherwise I will just roll my eyes and laugh.

Ferentz? Lol.... Iowa sucks

And to return to the OP.... I think Frost's no huddle approach isn't so much about speeding up the game and increasing snaps, as it is about limiting defensive adjustments and substitutions.

To add, UCF played 11 consecutive weeks from 23 Sep to 02 Dec last season after the hurricanes came through. Lots of cancellations and rescheduling. Also, the 02 Dec AAC championship game was also the third time Memphis and UCF prepared for each other on the season due to their rescheduled game.

Yep, USF and Memphis were pretty legit teams and UCF was worn down and still got by them. The bowl win over Auburn was no fluke. Can't wait for football season and see what this staff can do here! I'm still calling for an upset this year in the Big House. ;)

On a side note and this is nothing against Coach Frost, but I would like to see the looking to the sideline legislated out of college football. Take the control away for the coaches. Nobody wants to see a bunch of players rising up out of their stance and stare at the sideline while the fans wait. If you run no huddle, snap it. If more than one player looks to the sideline, it's a procedure penalty. This will also give the defense a bit of a break in an era that has greatly favored offenses and speed games up.

The no huddle under Bo was nothing compared to Frost or others.

UCF faced quite different offenses between their last two conference games and in playing Auburn - that was the main thing IMO.

So, in the Big Ten, after the first two games in the conference series, Iowa has won 4 of 5 games.

The series is 4-3 right now, as a conference game. It's the Hawkeyes, not the Cornhuskers in the lead.

The only other win in the modern era was Iowa's 10-7 win in 1981 for the Hawkeyes. Otherwise, Nebraska dominated in many other wins, though the 1979, 2011, 2012 and 2014 games were all close, with Huskers on top.

How long does it take for Scott Frost to win in the B1G West?

Game 3 @ Wisconsin?
Game 9 @ Iowa to even the series?

Please note, Nebraska should have other wins in the Big Ten this season, but how quickly will it take, since most project Nebraska to join Wisconsin and Iowa in competition for division titles in the B1G West.

2014, 5-3
2015, 3-5 Iowa won B1GW
2016, 6-3, tied with Iowa for #2
2017, 3-6
2018, Year 5 of West and College Football Playoff!

How long?

This season?
2019 or 2020?

When Hayden Fry hired Kirk Ferentz, he had a Big Ten title in Year 3, KF's first game at Iowa was that 1981 win. As a head coach, KF's first game, the Hawkeyes were smoked out by the Huskers at Kinnick. It took KF 4 seasons for Iowa's 8-0 Big Ten season and his first B1G title, sharing with O-H-I-O.

Neither Nebraksa nor Iowa have won a B1G title game. Each is 0-1, losing the 2012 and 2015 title games, respectively.

Who will be back in Indy first?

The B1G West has certainly got more interesting lately. Wisconsin is king. Iowa has won 4 of last 5 over Nebraska.

Minnesota and Northwestern have been competitive in the Nebraska series of late. Even, Illinois and Purdue have beat Nebraska, in the past 3 seasons, with Mike Riley at the helm.

Now, Scott Frost has arrived, taking over a Nebraska program coming off 4-8, like Iowa in 2012.

Three newcomers should play big roles! How many more?
  • PK Barret Pickering, true frosh
  • RB Greg Bell, junior
  • LB Will Honas, junior
The five September games should set tone for Scott Frost in Year 1 ....
  • Akron
  • Colorado
  • Troy
  • at Michigan
  • Purdue (HC)
At UCF, it was a .500 season in Year 1. At Nebraska, .500 would be improvement over both 2015 and 2017 seasons, but in past 10 seasons, the eight other seasons were all 9-10 win seasons.

Clearly, the B1G West has a lot to look forward in the future. With or without the huddles ....
