Did you guys read the article? https://nebraska.rivals.com/news/chinander-aims-to-restore-meaning-of-blackshirt-tradition

You're arguing with Charlie McBride about the tradition. He says that you give Blackshirts only to those who earn them and if that means that you give out only four, then so be it. I'm pretty sure that in the article that McBride said that the tradition "started" as 11 starters = 11 blackshirts, but it evolved to "you gotta earn it".

The article sums it up pretty well for me. I agree with all of it including Chin's comments to McBride.

If Devaney had seen what the Blackshirt tradition had become and the meaning behind it, if he had a unit that performed as badly as last year's defense, he would have taken away all the jerseys too. With as bad as our defense was last year, none of them deserve to wear it yet. Give them the black shirts when they earn it.

Very possible if he knew what it evolved into.

But what the staff was looking for was just being able to identify the first string from the second and third strings, that was basically all they wanted to accomplish.

This issue has been endlessly debated on here. But count me among the traditionalists. I think you give the black jerseys out to your starters at the end of Fall camp. That is the tradition and I think we should stick to it. Just my two cents

I criticized Bo when he did this "you have to earn it" stuff so, to be consistent, I will also criticize Frost for doing the same.

Right. You earn it when you're named the starter. You want to keep it? Now, that's another story.

If this is the case then you could just give them to first string and be done with it regardless of how you felt they played, being great, meh, or horrible.

If Scott says its ok to do it on merit, what can you say to the last MNC Cornhusker QB who was the most sought after coach last cycle and is now the head coach of his alma mater?...whom was and is also a Nebraskan..

SF will figure this out and leverage the Blackshirt tradition as best suits his current team and situation.

Don’t know exactly what you’re getting at, what ever Frost decides to handle this is up too him and his staff...

Just comparing original intent, which is what I think you were saying, to what they might do doing now and basically all I was really saying was its all out of our hands and that's ok.

I just quoted your post because it was a great reference to original intent of the beginning of the tradition. However, wasn't black the only color left in the retail store and that is why they got them? ....and now every Cornhusker team uses it.

From the story that was told by an assistant the owner of the sporting goods story had these Black practice Jersey’s he couldn’t get rid off so they decided the black ones would be a good contrast to separate from the others.

Yeah that's all Devaney was trying to accomplish was to identify the first string. That wasn't a tradition. It became a tradition with the success of our defense along with the meaning it had to the players as well as fans. To uphold that tradition, sometimes you have to take away the black shirts when they're not playing anywhere close to the standard of what a Blackshirt is supposed to represent.

Give them to the 14-ish "starters" at the beginning of the year, if someone plays like **** take it away from him while he goes back to battling for his spot, if he shapes up and becomes the deserving starter again give it back, if the 2nd string guy beats him out give him the blackshirt.

Make everyone wear yellow mesh jerseys until they earn the right to wear the scarlet and cream, make them wear plain white helmets until they earn the right to put the N on the side.

Just because it's Scott Frost doesn't mean I have to agree with everything. No panties in a bunch either. We all realize that I have no impact on the staff's decisions in any way. However, this is a message board to discuss Husker stuff. This falls under Husker stuff.

I was serious. If they have to “earn” a blackshirt why not have to “earn” everything.

Black shirts always had to be earned. You had to be part of the top unit to get it and if you weren't playing well and someone took your spot, you had to give the shirt up.

The blackshirts were “earned” when you were named 1st string. If you were replaced on 1st team you gave up the shirt and the other guy got it. That is fine with me. But now there are caveats and subjective interpretations of what is deserving of a blackshirt based on some arbitrary performance standard.

Maybe that arbitrary performance standard is more important to the coaching staff right now than whoever is named 1st string. If it's the coaching staff that is deciding what an acceptable standard is to receive a black shirt, that's fine with me.

Not Mythical National Champion. High Schools play for the Mythical National Championship, not universities. it's National Champion only and there is no Mythical at the beginning! LOL

Right on.....however...how can you truly claim to be Champion when another team claims the title as well? I guess Nebraska will be 'Cham' and Michigan can be 'pions' ;)
