I have a 2009 mazda cx9 that did not come with a factory tow package. I was going to buy a custom made hitch, but does anyone know how difficult it will be to wire it?

Will I be lucky enough that it comes with a wiring harness already at the back the I just need to wire in a plug?

Any help would be great

I had a Dodge Durango once that didn't have factory towing but there was a connector to run a 7-way harness back there. I can’t say the cx9 will have one but either way it wouldn’t be difficult to wire in your own.

You Tube is your friend with a lot of those kind of requests. Just learned how to change my Sonata brake pads and rotors on their site.

You should be able to buy a harness/module that will be basically plug-and-play. It's not like the old days when you could just splice into the tail/brake light wires, but the 3rd party stuff makes it pretty easy. Try etrailer if I'm allowed to say that.

Are you installing the hitch yourself? If not, just have whoever is doing the hitch do the harness for you.

Otherwise it should be just about identical to this video of them doing it on an '08. The only thing I'd worry about is how you route the cable underneath the vehicle. If you accidentally catch that cable on a spinning part and it wraps up at 80 mph you might not be happy with the outcome.

They're not super specific with where you place the cable, I'd guess if you can find any other cables that run the full length of the chassis a safe bet would be to zip tie to those.
