Trophy case question

So I am in Lincoln visiting my parents. My brother and I decided to go tour the trophy case area between drinks in the Haymarket (pacing is critical, lol). I looked into the trophy case with the national title trophies. And to my surprise I saw four crystal footballs on top of black trophies instead of three. I looked closer and saw that the older 1971 title trophy has been replaced with a crystal ball trophy. The 1970 title trophy is still the older trophy.

What does anyone know about this? Why was the older 71 trophy replaced with a crystal football but not 70???

I don't have any particular insight but I believe we shared the 1970 national championship. We didn't win the coaches poll, which typically awarded the crystal ball (sears) trophy.

I thought this was going to be a question about carpentry.

I get your point about the split title in 1970. But the crystal football as a trophy wasn't invented until the 90's. My deeper question is why create a retroactive trophy for 71 rather than stick with the trophy that was actually awarded?

Thats really strange. I wonder if something happened to it? It was there the last time I saw them in 2012.

According to the Wikipedia page for the AFCA National Championship Trophy (the crystal ball trophy), starting in 2009 the AFCA starting allowing schools to buy a replica trophy for any year they finished first in the Coach's Poll prior to the trophy's creation in 1986. Since Nebraska was the AP champion in 1970 and Texas was the Coach's Poll champion, there is no crystal ball for 1970.

Nice info! But, why display a replica instead of the real thing? Its an odd choice to me.

Thanks! This explains it.

I think a security person told me that the Heisman’s aren’t the originals. Maybe someone in the know can confirm, but I suspect the trophies are original except for the 1971?

Perception is reality. Since the AFCA allows past National Championships to be presented in the present form why not do it so recruits & fans can look at it instantly and know how many championships we have. I would guess its more of a PR thing for recruits, and fans.

Those are all replicas I believe, the real, original ones are in the coaches area I believe. I believe that to be true of all NC trophy's and Heisman's.
