No Lamar Jackson at CB? IMO, he will end up being one of if not the best defensive player we have this year. The guy is a stud who can make some plays our other corners can not. Much the same as Young, Jackson took a lot of heat last year for some things that weren't necessarily his fault. He is probably the most physically gifted guy we have back there.

I'm not too worried about Lamar although he still needs to be more physical. The one tackle he really went after, he kind of dove at the receivers feet. He was quite a bit bigger than the guy it appeared. However, the other side has me worried. I'm hoping Bootle steps it up or maybe Eric Lee but it is concerning as of now.

I also saw it that way. I've done a 180 on TG. He just doesn't look ready yet. His body needs to mature. We know he can spin it, and we will probably need him this year, but based on what we saw, he's still developing. Someone said something about TG in this system looking a bit like TA in Riley's system. I thought that was an interesting and likely accurate assessment.

I think Bradley and Bell, with Washington at RB. I just think Bradley fits the O better than Wilbon and could have a nice year.

Yes sir. Martinez is way, wayyyyy to good to redshirt. Relative to Martinez, Gebbia has cement shoes. But he throws the ball well (as does Martinez) and will be an excellent back-up qb.

I would think in 4 months that Martinez shoulder should be 100% and ready to go come for fall camp...

I thought Martinez and Gebbia were 1 and 2 even with 2 dropped snaps Gebbia had.

I have been pulling for Gebbia because he's been committed to the program for such a long time and really shown a lot of patience to get to this point. Beyond that, he's actually performed quite well whenever he's gotten an opportunity. He's still very much the highly touted 4-star QB we all hoped he would be. Unfortunately, I just don't think he's ever going to play in this system.

I think Adrian Martinez is going to earn the starting job. The biggest advantage I thought Gebbia had over him was that he's already had a year as a college student-athlete and might be in a better position to be in the spotlight, but after watching Martinez in interviews, I don't know if that's the case. Martinez seems off the charts poised for a guy who has only been on campus for a few months. Beyond that, I just don't see much separation between the two players other than Adrian's upside ability as a runner. That will be the difference maker.

Finally, I think it's worth mentioning that both players have four years of eligibility remaining. Whoever wins the job is likely going to be a fixture at QB for the foreseeable future. I just can't see the coaches waiting four years to plug in a player with all the tools they want for that position and not giving a shot to Martinez, the guy they went all out to recruit.

Gebbia has done everything right, but he's going to have to transfer. He's too good to be a back-up QB and it's conceivable to think that he could still develop into an NFL-caliber player. He's already proven that he's a team first guy and willing to stick things out through thick and thin, but he's got to think of his future. His time at Nebraska was simply an unfortunate set of circumstances.

Impossible to grade the QB from Saturday.

My major concern with Martinez is that he is the same concern I had when I watched his game tape. He is use to being the best athlete on the field. So on RPOs he tends to give up real easy on passing and takes off running. We've seen that story before, it doesn't work well. He has got to trust his WRs more to get open. He is no longer always going to be the best athlete on the field. I also took his runs on Saturday with a grain of salt. He is playing two hand touch and that kind of paralyzes a defense. The defense wasn't allowed to be aggressive with him and you didn't see the D swarming to him like they did the RBs. They almost had to run at him with half speed, which can make him look better than what it was. In live football, you put a Spy on Martinez and make him throw. Sounds like a phrase commonly used between 2010-2013. I have a feeling he will be fine passing after our staff coaches him up but it may take a little time. So IMO I still don't know that he is ready. We really haven't seen him play yet. I hope his arm is there. IMO a QB's second read should be to run, not his first but that's my opinion.

Gebbia has a better arm and likely always will. He started off in a grove but missed someone wide open on a wheel route and that seemed to mess with his head. His passes were off after that and honestly that's the worst I have ever seen him throw the ball. Take away that "give me" 57 yd TD to Warner and TG stat line doesn't seem so hot. 11-16 for 68 yards (w/out). However, there were a few times in which he was "sacked" that I believe in real football, he'd have escaped the pocket. I felt like the 2 hand touch deal put him at a major disadvantage in the pocket. On one play in particular, an end just barley touches TG as he's stepping up in the pocket. TG had someone wide open. In real football, that play is probably six. But in two hand touch, it's a sack.

Bunch was almost impossible to read. He didn't have the cast A-Mart & TG had and he was playing the better of the 2 defenses.

In all, I enjoyed watching the spring game but it was basically useless on judging the QBs.

We do have a very talented receiving core. The nice thing is we won't need to protect for 5 seconds while the QB stands in the pocket and survey's the field to get them the ball in this offense. We will hand it to them, throw bubble screens, etc. We will also get more one on one matchups, because the threat of the QB run will bring another defender into the box.

I'm not sure how accurate of a two deep I could make right now. The Red team had more top players than the White team did, so I would have expected those players to have better days.

I thought Bunch outperformed Vedral on Saturday. I guess from reading everything and hearing some chatter about how Vedral was head and shoulders above the rest, I guess I just expected more.

Martinez was better than Gebbia on Saturday but not by much. I think the running ability was the difference but I am not sure those same running lanes are open against an opponent not in base defense when you're not wearing a green jersey. It is similar to 7 on 7 when you know you aren't going to have guys at your feet, you can keep your eyes up and throw better passes.

Agreed and that's why I still think the job is Gebbia's to lose. But Martinez can develop a better passing game. TG does not have the athletic gifts of Martinez.

It is a tight race and I like that. We only know what we've seen. Gebbia makes some nice reads and hits some tough passes. He is mobile enough to get the job down. We've talked a lot about who made better runs and passes, but what I would like to know is who you all thought made the better reads, showed better patience, and made decisive decisions the quickest.

When I look back again, I see a lot of mechanical things that were holding Gebbia up. He had trouble with the snap, he had trouble with the handoffs, things like that. If he cleans that stuff up, he is probably fine. Maybe that is what HCSF is talking about when he says practice will fix a lot of the things we are seeing.

QB competition has been really fun to watch. When’s the last time the competition was this good? Im pretty sure Martinez isn’t going to be redshirting this season barring injury.

RB is gonna be Bell and Ozigbo with a dose of Bradley. Don’t foresee Wilbon contributing much. Mazour is capable, and Miles Jones and Mo Washington could both earn roles.

WR is deep. This is the position I’m least concerned about.

TE’s pleasantly surprised me. Stoll, Allen, and Rafdal are all going to have roles.

OL was tough to evaluate, but I liked what I saw from Foster and Farmer. Seemed to struggle in pass protection, so that’s something to keep an eye on for the fall.

DL we have a lot of bodies here that can contribute. We’re better off here than I thought we were heading into spring. The competition for playing time is gonna make this a really solid unit come fall.

LBs (ILB and OLB) will have a lot of competition too. First team off what I saw goes Miller, Young, Barry, and Dixon (if he can play).

DBs we have our safeties in Reed and Williams. D Williams, Dismuke, and Cam Taylor all have a shot. Top 3 corners right now appear to be Lee, Jackson, and Bootle in no order. CBs need to make some strides this summer.

TL;DR: really excited for the next few months. A lot of competition remaining and these guys are hungry for playing time. There’s a different feel to the program right now, and we can all sense it. GBR

Watching UCF last year I was struck by how much that offense relied on Milton hitting receivers WAY downfield.

Agree and there was at least 2 plays were Gebbia was touched and called down where he wouldn't have been down in the game. One would have been a touchdown pass and the other would have been a long run probably for a TD as well.

That is why I said the difference in playing with green jerseys is big. It affected plays that were positive yardage that may not have been and it affected plays that resulted in negative plays that may not have been.

This can go both ways. There were plays where the QB’s were stopped by touch where in an actual game those wouldn’t have been tackles and the QB would’ve gained more yards.

I am sure Gebbia believes that he is in the hunt to start and he has the reputation of being all in when it comes to working on his game. If the starter ends up being Amart, as long as the competition is considered fairly won, I think Gebbia stays. If he leaves, Gebbia would transfer, sit a year, and then need to compete all over again if his chosen team is at all competitive. Zac Lee, TMart, Tommy all spent time out with injuries and Tanner Lee missed a half a game with an injury. We were playing Darlington at the end of a bowl game a couple of years ago.
If Gebbia ends up second, he could still roll with the team for a year, see how things shake out, and still transfer and have two years of playing time after sitting out.

Gebbia is a red shirt freshman, and Martinez is a true freshman. If Martinez redshirts there will only be a one year separation between the two. If Martinez does not redshirt there will be no separation
