Chatter is Hunter may be leaving to become assistant at Xavier per Husker Hoops Central. Anyone else hearing this? If so, this could be fatal to Miles in near future.

That would suck, but you couldn’t blame him for moving on to a better program if an opportunity cake up.

Don't really blame the guy if he goes. There has been chatter about Xavier and UConn. He would be leaving for a better program and more stability. If Miles had an extension would Hunter still be leaving? We really don't know, but I am not sure this whole thing is being handled very well by Moos at all. There are rumors that he has offered short term extensions to Miles that have been rejected. I am not sure that Miles deserves a long term extension, but if Moos is saying that Miles is his coach, he needs to get a long term extension figured out. It is the price of doing business. If he isn't your guy, then fire him and move on. You can't just keep kicking the can down the road with short term extensions. It will cost you players and assistant coaches IMO. I absolutely don't blame Miles for wanting a long term extension. I almost get the feeling that Moos is just trying to get Miles to walk away and find another job.

Damn, that's the 2nd time a Hurley has poached one of our assistants.

Wonder if this will lead to some transfers? Hunter was the reason many of our best recruits came here. Also, Hunter was also our lead recruiter for incoming recruit Xavier Johnson.

I'm not sure if the contract discussions between Miles/Moos have much to do with Hunter's decision. I would guess just about everybody knows that Miles is treading water with or without an extension. Hunter has been here for five years and has brought in more talent than we have had in all of the years since Nee. But the return on that talent has been marginal. It was probably time for him to leave if he has aspirations of being a HC some day.

You mean head coaches get contract extensions and then get fired or move on, anyway? This is crazy talk.

With UConn's conference affiliation, this is a risky move.
Hopefully, Kenya will let his kid stay here and lead my alma mater to another state title in 2019.

Why is this a risky move based on conference affiliation? When UConn is good, them along with Houston, Cincinnati and Wichita St, Memphis, Temple and Tulsa can make up a pretty strong league.

It is a pretty strong league, and I don't think it's that risky of a move for Hunter. But I do think UConn would have been better off to take football down to FCS and join the Big East. Surely if the Big East was able to wedge Butler in among the Catholic schools, they would have made room for UConn too.

Have no idea why Moos would be considering an extension for Miles. I think he needs to see what Miles' team does next year before fork out more money for Timmy. (TM is a very mediocre coach).

Huge loss for Miles. I don't blame Hunter for not staying. Tim Miles can thank Coach Hunter for bringing those transfers and talent from the east coast. It's saved Tim's job for an extra year, maybe more.

Tim has brought in his share of recruits too: Akenton, Thorbjarnonsen, Horne, Evelyn, Jacobsen, Hammond, Fuller to name just a few.

Not sure if it's proper to link, but over at Husker Hoops Central, page 3 of the "Kenya Hunter" thread has some very interesting takes on the Moos-Miles relationship.

Basketball success more than any other sport changes so fast because one player can make a huge difference. In order to get those players you have to have coaches like Hunter. IMO, this is just the nail in the coffin for Miles. I like the guy as a person I really do but I do not believe he is an effective offensive coach. Even though he will be here next year I think most people believe it very well will be his last.

Moos sure is taking his time with that contract extension for Miles.

Maybe he'll hire Hunter back as head coach next year after he fires Miles. Hunter is about the only coach who has proven he can bring in Top 100 players to Nebrasketball. I think I'd give him a shot before hiring another mid-major guy.
