.....but I think I would sign the York kid anyway as a show of good faith AND so he does not come back to bite us
I’m sure they really wanted to do that. But if they think he isn’t going to qualify, the staff is essentially leaving a spot open. As it stands, the situation has produced a scramble to find a DT.

But Snodgrass thinks he’s 99% sure to... do we not show faith in a coach who can help us?
Plus... WHEN has a Duke NOT come through???

Do we even know why he hasn't qualified? Is it classroom grades or ACT score. Given the comment about knowing in May I assume it was classroom scores. If it was a classroom grade issue then he could have been on the edge when we offered and he didn't come through his senior year with the good enough grades. Then my next question is if other D1 schools MAY be on him, I am to assume (I hate doing that) that he has a very low GPA and that would not qualify him at Nebraska but perhaps may at other places?

I really don't know, this is all sort of murky. Generally, kids find a way to get the classes they need and the grade but the ACT/SAT is the problem. Who knows, I sure don't but this entire situation is very unfortunate for the young man.

Read the quote from his coach. Has the act score needs to finish 2nd semester like the first. Making up for a blown freshmen year. Masry has been through a lot. When good people came into his life he started to excel.

Glen Snodgrass is a man of his word, if he says Masry will qualify, he'll qualify.

We are missing out on a good person, that works his butt off to be a great player. I'll root for him anywhere, I hope it is not against us someday.

We may be but we don't know the specifics of his situation. Sometimes things are out of your control. The telling thing is that as far as we know not a single other power 5 school has offered him. IF that's the case, with the difficulty in finding DTs that should "be yer sign" that something isn't up to snuff. I hope the kid makes it and gets his college paid. Hopefully someday it's at NU but I have to trust that our coaching staff is doing the right thing here.

Maybe Oregon State will come through with an offer. I thought Iowa was on him early as well.

So what's York going to do? Get upset with the Nebraska program and not send kids there? Yeah right.

I don't think we have to worry about him "coming back to bite us". Showing good faith isn't likely going to ensure his coming to NU when he gets elgible.

I think that's what he is saying. You sign him to show that we want his talents here, because if we don't sign him and Wisconsin does, he'll remember it when he starts looking at D1 schools again. He'll see the loyalty, even though they knew he wouldn't qualify. If he doesn't qualify here, we know for sure he isn't going to qualify at Wisconsin.

What I am curious about is, I have always heard how strict Wisconsin is on entry requirements. if that is so, how can they show any real interest in this kid?

This is what I posted on yesterday. If you show faith in him and sign him, even though he may not not qualify, you have a leg up on other schools when he gets done with JUCO.

Big believer in Frost, but saying we want Nebraska kids then doing this with Masry? Not sure it will sit well with coaches. And we shall recall it is a fraternity, so make one coach mad or skeptical and it can spread quickly.

Not letting him sign. He has the ACT score he needs. His coach says he will qualify. Yhs should be good enough, don't you think?

Maybe they don't like him as a football player. It is nearly impossible to vet a DT playing for york because the competition is so bad...maybe they didn't like his feet, balance, strength....you can never have too many lineman but we really only need a few NT in the the 3/4.

Maybe they judged him not a strong enough prospect to carry the risk of him not qualifying.

His coach saying "he'll qualify" doesn't mean much to the admissions office. Not saying he won't but I suspect our compliance staff has a good handle on the situation.

I doubt this is a situation where the compliance office was involved in the decision to pull an offer.

The offer wasn't pulled because the kid is a grade risk.

If Nebraska took every marginal player with marginal grades across the state of Nebraska just to protect relationships our class would be ranked around 90th.

If people were familiar with Masry's back story they wouldn't be as eager to throw him under the bus. This was not a situation of a kid blowing off school to mess around and have a good time...he was in dire circumstances and the fact he has come this far is commendable. The snide comments should have been left at the door.

As for a decision on how this is handled at a university level, it is possible he isn't meeting entrance requirements that he might at other schools.

Awesome job on the Sarajevo reference.
WW I. They just don’t make wars like that anymore. (Don’t know if anyone here knew the late Hans Brisch who was an NU administrator and Governor’s chief of staff quite a few years ago. He was known to some of us as the Kaiser, which always brought a few puzzled looks from the history-challenged — but not from German-native Hans who thought it was funny.)

That's a good story about the kid. Unfortunately our staff doesn't get to use whether or not he is a good kid or not to decide whether or not to let him sign. It's not that simple. I gaurantee you our coaches wish him the best as well.

THEN we move on and try and try and find his replacement. It's not personal.. it is what it is.

I think you are misreading this a bit if you are seeing a bunch of people making snide remarks and throwing him under the bus. The argument seems to be that there are posters who believe the staff is making a mistake by not risking a scholarship on him. Some of us get a little defensive when we think a poster knows more about the situation then the coaches.

I don't understand how it is risking a scholarship on him. Not that I think that Frost needs to include him in the class, I just don't think that if they did, it would be risking a scholarship.

Secondly, I don't believe the decision is based on grades so it is a irrelevant point.

With all that said, if Nebraska over signs by 3, and included Mapieu in the signing class, then Mapieu didn't end up qualifying, no scholarship is used on him, because he would have never entered school, so how is it risked?

It is being risked because Nebraska can only over sign by 3
The risk comes in the opportunity cost of not being able to sign someone else instead of Masry who may or may not be eligible, there are legit concerns about his grades
Otherwise at this late date Masry would have a long list of offers, which he does not have

This is a team that has talent
But has plenty of holes to fill as well, at this critical juncture Nebraska needs as many kids who can contribute as possible

No more skinny rosters well below the 85 limit like in previous regimes

A wasted scholarship would be defined by looking at Duane Johnson or any other number of other players who never saw the field but USED a scholarship for years. The only thing not signing Mapieu does is cost the risk of signing someone else. That isn't a risk of wasting a scholarship, because if he didn't qualify he wouldn't be on scholarship.

You are making assumptions that whoever gets the opportunity to sign instead of Mapieu, will contribute. I would contend that the odds of Mapieu becoming eligible by May, is higher that the average number of recruits in a class that will contribute. Even if Mapieu is 50/50, that is similar to the ratio of kids that are contributors/ kids that sign NLI.

I believe that he doesn't have a long list of offers, because people watched the senior film and saw a kid who didn't always give max effort and was controlled one on one by players that won't be playing on Saturdays. He looked like a guy that doesn't love football.

Masry is a 3 star kid again with some grade issues and other question marks that even you brought up that make him a risk for NU and others

I will leave it up to this coaching staff- to make the right decision on this 3 star with lots of question marks, including his eligibility, vs other 3 star kids in places of need who might be a lower risk eligibility and otherwise

NU needs to move away from the mindset that its ok to have a roster that allows 85 scholarship players and have just 77 on scholarship.:
https://www.cornnation.com/2017/7/1...tball-fall-scholarship-chart-recruiting-spots

NU needs to stop playing with one arm tied behind its back- you are either playing big boy football or you arent
