Red shirt rule change proposal

The ACC is currently proposing a rule change that would allow kids to play in up to 4 games and still be able to use a red shirt year. If it were to be passed it would go into effect this fall, but would not be retroactive.

I don't know if this will get passed although it does sound like there is growing support for it. I don't know if the powers to be will go for 4 games as that is a 1/3 of a season, but anything would be a great start IMHO. If something like this had been passed last year POB might have gotten to play the bowl game instead of Fyfe with a bum hand.

Especially as you have more and more "stars" sitting out bowl games so as not to get injured and hurt their draft status. Maybe some hot shot freshmen who are redshirting might drum up some excitement.

Alabama is going to crush it even more if this rule changes. Imagine if they had kept Tua on the bench for a few of those early season blowout games in order to keep his redshirt alive for the playoffs. Now Tua can go win them the title and still have 4 full seasons of eligibility remaining.

Seriously, Alabama's recruiting pitch will be redshirt the first 10 games of the season and play in the last 4 while then having 4 more seasons of eligibility and exposure. Saban won't lose again.

That will still need to be balanced with the 85 scholarship limit, but I see what you are saying and Saban has no problem running off non-contributors.

Bowls don't mean much unless in final 4. Let's see what they have

The NCAA makes things way more complicated than it needs to be.

That's what I have been in favor of since this stupid 4 team playoff started, and especially last year when certain draft eligible players elected to sit out their bowl games. The remaining bowl games not involved in the playoff need to be treated as what they were first intended to be, rewards to the teams. They are glorified exhibitions. So let kids who redshirted/transferred play in those non-playoff bowl games. If these bowls want to do something to keep the interest in them, you let the teams play players who their fans have not seen yet. Let it be a prelude to the next season.

Imagine after the end of the regular season in 2016 when Nebraska played Tennessee, in a meaningless bowl game, if Nebraska would have had the option with TA out, to play POB and/or Tanner Lee. No offense to Fyfe, but that would have generated a hell of a lot more excitement for that game, and might have got more people to travel to these bowl destinations. I can't believe these bowl committees that want people to come to their cites haven't thought of this yet.

I remember when Callahan was here there was talk the possibility of players getting 5 years. Obviously that went nowhere.

The NCAA certainly makes things more complicated, and then they can't figure stuff out, or make timely decisions either.
