QB struggling? Pull him for true freshman?

Bama pulled Hurts for Tua in the middle of the championship game. Tua has played some as a backup this year and played well.

How many times did the fans call for Lee to be sat down, even for just a series, to put in a backup?

I don't remember the reasons against pulling a starting QB, but it was something about chemistry or confidence I believe.

For Saban to make that call at halftime of the biggest game of the year... wow. I thought for sure Bama was on the path downward due to losing assistants, but if he has a QB like that? Watch out for the next 3 years.

So you are saying Saban has a rather large set of onions hanging downstairs? I agree - took a big chance but I guess he felt that was the best (and maybe) only shot to win the game. Worked out...he looks like a freaking MENSA.

I'm just thankful we didn't pull POB's redshirt a few years ago and saved all is eligibility when all we had was a walk on caliber QB with a busted hand. I remember reading how silly it would have been to do that...
The Iowa game was hardly the National Championship. It would have been beyond silly to give away a year of eligibility for that game.

If blo had done that in the one conference title game we were way up in, I think he may still be coaching here.

When you’re nine and three and not playing for a conference championship, why pull the red shirt off of POB? It makes no sense… If it were earlier in the year, sure. But not at that stage of the season.

I agreed with the decision to maintain his redshirt then, and I agree with the decision even more now.

...and we got absolutely zilcho out of POB since, and probably won't going forward. Soooo glad we saved all the eligibility, and as a bonus we got to be Iowa's ***** again.

You’re not making much sense… If POB is going to do zilch for us moving forward, how in the hell would he have been good enough for us against Iowa? It sounds like either way, we were going to be I was *****. At least, using your logic.

a walk on with a busted hand was not our best option that day...and I'm drinking the QB recruit koolaid. I will never understand not playing POB when we needed him, never, he came here to play QB and we trotted out Fyfe who was busted to boot, that's basically saying "I give up".

And I will never understand wanting to burn his redshirt for one game at the end of a mediocre season. If he had been the backup all season and had already burned his redshirt, absolutely play him. But to do it against Iowa on Black Friday would have been negligent.

And we didn't play the QB with the broken hand that day, we played the one with the torn hamstring.

Osborne did the same against Miami , Frazier off the bench. Replacing Barringer. granted Frazier was not a freshman.

and in the Fiesta bowl in 86, pulling clayton for freshman SteveTaylor . That almost worked
The difference was that in both of the instances you cite, the red shirt had already been burned previously.

Keep in mind, hindsight is a pretty useful thing. At the time this happened, Riley was playing for the future. We had no shot at a conference championship, it really wouldn’t have changed anything had POB played and won. We’re still in the same boat. And so Riley was playing to preserve the red shirt and buy more time down the road. Riley was expecting to be here longer than just this year. Had Riley kept his job, having POB as a redshirt senior may have been a pretty good decision.

You can't ever pull a struggling quarterback because it might hurt his feelings.

With that said, Frankie London says hi.

It isn't hindsight if you wanted to do it back then, like I did...and are you sure Rykers hand wasn't busted that day?

I was talking about the hindsight that said POB would do zilcho moving forward.

I do respect that your stance hasn’t changed from then to now. This is just one of those where we both are on opposite sides of the fence.

Water under the bridge, better days ahead!

Remember years ago when Bama wanted Mike Riley? Bet the Tide wouldn’t have been close then to what they are now if Riley took the job.
