Setter plans to transfer from Nebraska volleyball program

Nebraska setter Hunter Atherton is looking to transfer to a different program, coach John Cook said in a news release on Thursday evening.

Atherton, a sophomore-to-be from Prospect, Ohio, played in 20 matches during the Huskers’ 2017 NCAA championship season. She set the first two matches of her career at the season-opening VERT Challenge, logging a career-high 47 assists against Oregon. Atherton was the backup for most of the season after Kelly Hunter returned from an injury. Atherton finished the season with 137 assists, 13 service aces and 46 digs.

“I want to thank Hunter for her contributions to our team this season, which included setting two very tough matches in her first career college action to start the season for us, and also playing a key role as a serving sub throughout the season, especially during big moments of the Final Four,” Cook said in a news release. “I wish her all the best as she moves forward in her career.”

Hunter has used up her eligibility. Atherton may have been the only setter on the roster for the spring season, but would have been in a competition with incoming freshman Nicklin Hames to be the starter for the 2018 season.

“I really love our team, and they are an amazing group of individuals. I will miss them more than anything,” Atherton said in a news release. “I have made some of my best friends at Nebraska and I will forever be grateful for that. I also want to thank our fans for their support. Being able to experience this has been life changing, and I want to thank all the fans for everything they do for the program.”

The incoming setter is #1 setter and overall #4 in the country I believe. Wish Hunter best of luck.

Probably a situation after season review. Cook couldn't commit she would start or even play with incoming recruit. Have to earn it, if you want to compete stay, if you want me to give you the job that isnt going to happen.

Too bad Hames couldn't graduate early so she could be here for the spring. I heard she wanted to, but for some reason ended up not being able to.

maybe a little jealous of all the niklin hames chatter. be nice to see her compete, but, it is possible she wants to go to a school where she knows she is gonna play.

Nicklin is very pretty as well and extremely nice. We go to same rehab place in Knoxville. She has Husker gear on most days. She loves talking about the Huskers

When is the recruiting period for volleyball?

Does Cook go after a second setter in this class or attempt to find a transfer that can play right away?

The last championship team, the one with the Rolfzen twins received rings at the football Spring Game in April 2016. It was shown on the telecast and I recall hearing them talking about the team helping design the rings.

PT, the new freshman setter will start day 1.

You made me curious, so I looked the incoming freshman up... wow.

Meet The 2017 Under Armour All-Americans: Nicklin Hames

In the state of Tennessee, 8th graders are allowed to compete on varsity high school athletic teams. Five years ago, Nicklin Hames was one of those 8th graders playing up with the high school crowd, and at the end of that season, she was named state MVP.

Last month, Hames led the Webb School to its fifth Division II-A in a row and was named MVP of the tournament. The Nebraska-bound senior might just be the best setter in the class of 2018, and she got to put her talents to the test against some of the world’s best earlier this year as a member of the U.S. girls youth national team that competed in the FIVB U18 World Championships.

Nicklin Hames
Position: Setter

Height: 5-foot-11

High School: Webb (Knoxville, TN)

Club: K2

College Commitment: Nebraska

As a setter and hitter for Webb this fall, Hames ranked third on the team with 225 kills, hitting .423, and 32 total blocks. She was second on the team with 385 assists.

Hames comes from a family rich with volleyball talent. Her mother Chris is her coach at Webb, and was a setter at Oregon State and a member of the Australian national team. Her father Jason spent some time on the University of Tennessee coach staff, and younger sister Kayleigh was Webb's kills leader this fall as a junior and is committed to Pepperdine.

“Nicklin is a great all-around player and an elite setter with strong leadership skills,” Nebraska head coach said of his future setter. “She competes really hard and we have been impressed with her ability to take average hitters and make them great.”
