Defense-what does Chin have to work with?

Chinander plays an attacking style out of the 3-4. Is it possible that will fit our current personnel better than the wait and react that we've seen recently? I think the talents of the Davis twins will be better taken advantage of, in addition to Deontre Thomas. We will see more swarming to the ball from the LBs as well. Better productivity from the front 7 should help our DBs.

I think we can be pretty disruptive and have some decent talent up the middle: DL, ILB, Safety. But we have some serious questions on the outside. Do we have anyone that can rush the passer off the edge? Do we have any corners that can cover? Do we have enough depth at CB, to run Nickel and Dime packages?

He is the player I am most curious about. You could tell what Davison thinks of him, and now that he is on staff the kid will either move on, or have to prove himself more than any other to sniff the field again.

Good point, it's almost as if the CBs had very little time for fundamental technical practice time. Don't know what their practices were like but I bet there wasn't much individual time focusing on fundamentals of their positions. With simpler scheme and renewed focus he could be great.

I don't think the scheme will be any simpler but it will be more logical and well thought out IMO. The kid is extremely talented and could play multiple positions on the field. He could be a stud in Chin's defense.

Collin Miller is an outside pass rusher and was significantly under used and misused last year. Stille can play OLB or rush End and provide outside containment and pressure up field. He has speed and motor. Tyrin Ferguson is also a pass rusher that was mismanaged and thrived when actually placed in the game. I also think a guy like Quayshon Alexander could present issues as a pass rusher in certain packages. He is really more of a 4-3 end as he’s not one who can turn and run with a DB as an OLB and not big enough for end in a 3-4 but he will he used in packages.
David Alston will be small this year but watch how he can turn and run in his film. He can cover or rush. Alex Davis killed us on that cause he couldn’t turn and run with guys. Wildeman will be able to be used as a pass rusher in situational play this year as well.

Look at safety and we have Aaron Williams and Antonio Reed who are great players with good coaching and scheme. Jojo Domann will be good there. We forget about Jojo but he is a baller and has 3 years left To ball. High football IQ, hard hitter, team player, fast, and takes good angles. Tony Butler is a safety not a corner and if used right he can excel there as well. Deionte williams is going to help us immediately at nickel and safety and special teams. Can Jones is a silent commit and CJ Smith is very good.
Avery Anderson needs to play corner. He was a 4* coming out of high school there. He has good hip flexibility and speed for it. His issue is Diaco had his corners playing 15yds off the ball. It was scheme and coaching more than skill and they mis used him as a safety.
An example of why Diaco’s corners looked so bad... Chris Jones looked awful in that scheme as well and he had been lock down when he could actually play on the guy.
Eric Lee and Bootle will look way better. Remember Bootle was one of the fastest guys in Florida and runs a legit 4.3 40. Lamar can play in an aggressive scheme. But he has to learn how to hit hard and enjoy it. His issue is lack of confidence not talent, speed, or skill set.
DL will look much better under Duvall’s strength training and Chinander’s scheme. Let Mick free. Play Mick as an End some, put Khalil as a NG and get his weight up to 310, D Daniels is going to feast as a run blocker up the middle at NG, D Thomas should have been an end as he has great hands and speed off the ball there, C Davis will look much better with an aggressive scheme, then if we see some improvement in D Neal and plug Wildeman on the outside we should be good.

ILB needs to reshape their bodies. Avery Roberts is carrying too much weight. It’s slowed him down significantly. Will Honas will be an animal in the middle. Mohammad Barry is in the same position as Avery. He was fast and is now slow, needs to gain quick twitch back and lose the body build short muscles, I look for dedrick young to improve inside with an aggressive scheme and for a guy like Willie Hampton to rise up with his athleticism and off the chart sparq scores. Just waiting for an aggressive scheme that fits him.

So your answer is we have the guys... we just hadn’t developed them right with the type of muscle or speed they are able to have. That’s gonna get fixed over the next 7 mo. Then we are going to run a scheme that’s more like Wisconsin’s - aggressive, fast, on the ball. And that will help tremendously.

I like what you said about reshaping the LB's bodies. I have a hard time believing Mo Barry was ever fast. Might need to slim some of them out a bit and regain that speed. Looks like a lot of our players on defense had good talent coming out of high school but haven't been developed properly.

I admittedly drink too much, but I'd honestly like to see those plays, because I definitely do not remember them.

We made a good turnaround in 2008. I think we can do it again.

Just because we sucked so bad this year doesn't mean that we have no talent on the defensive side of the ball. It could seriously be all about coaching and scheme. If Chins can get us under 30 ppg, we will do fine next year.

I doubt we ever get near the 2009 defense, mostly due to the style of offense we will be running, which will give the opponents a couple more possessions per game.

Maybe the defense will be fine allowing 30 ppg if our offense can score 40 points a game. Allowing a team to score 50 points while only scoring 21 is horrible, but is allowing 50 points while scoring 60, isn't quite as bad, amirite?
