Report: Florida State actually might not be bowl eligible

In the weird and bizarre winding road that has been the Florida State Seminoles 2017 season, this latest development almost seems fitting.

According to a report from Reddit, Florida State, despite having the requisite 6 wins, could actually still not be bowl eligible.

/r/CFB bases its report on NCAA rules that state a win by an FBS team (FSU) over and FCS team (in this case Delaware State) only counts toward bowl eligibility if the FCS team is utilizing at least 90% of its scholarship limit.

Florida State beat Delaware State in November by a score of 77-6 for its fourth win before beating Florida and then winning a rescheduled game with Louisiana-Monroe in order to reach 6 wins.

However, after receiving data from Delaware State, Reddit reports that Delaware State had not awarded more than 90 percent of its scholarships, thus rendering Florida State’s win over them as one that, by rule, does not count toward bowl eligibility.

You can view the Delaware State scholarship data here.

Given that we’re less than a week away from the Independence Bowl between Florida State and Southern Miss, even Reddit acknowledges that nothing significant is likely to come of this report in terms of the Seminoles actually not playing in the game. But had the report surfaced earlier in the season, Florida State would likely have missed out on a bowl to the three remaining FBS teams who reached 6 wins but were left out of bowl slots due to the total amount of bowl-eligible teams this season.

Regardless, its quite the scenario, especially considering that Florida State had to win its final three games to secure bowl eligibility, including the rescheduled game against ULM.

According to Matt Baker of the Tampa Bay Times, the Independence Bowl says it’s an NCAA issue between the teams, but it’s preparing for the game as if FSU and Southern Miss will play.

FSU sets record for longest bowl-streak in college football history

In a season characterized by monumental underachievement, the 2017 Florida State football team has just done something unparalleled in the history of the college game. And — you may need to sit down for this — it was positive.

By defeating the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks in Tallahassee on Saturday afternoon, the Seminoles improved their season record to 6-6. Now, a .500 winning percentage is hardly enough to turn many heads, but in FSU’s case, it has led to a feat that no other college football program has accomplished. Ever.

By getting to 6 wins, the ’Noles have reached bowl eligibility, which means that their streak of 35 bowls in a row will be extended to 36. 35 was tied for the most consecutive bowls ever, with a Nebraska streak well since expired. FSU will now have 36 all to itself, with a chance to add many more.

35 and 40. Those two numbers became the goals of this team when conference and national championships became unrealistic: the first applied to extending the bowl streak, the second to adding another W to lengthen a span of 40 consecutive winning seasons.

One down. One to go.

You mean *buy the streak. Justice would be slick will taggart leading them to five and seven. That way he can avoid coaching in a bowl game the normal way.

Wouldn't a sell out imply that everything has been sold?

I'm no fan of any propping myself but it is what it is.

Sponsorships or companies buy all the remaining tickets for cheap. Give them away to their employees or customers. If bulk buying for 5 or 7 bucks a ticket equals a sellout, then you have a sellout. Same with boxes. We buy one, rather it gets used is a whole different topic. Seldom is it ever 3/4 full.

You act like this happens all the time. It doesn't. You see it happen when Nebraska has a non-conference game against North-South-West Palooka State School of Hair Design, and the visiting team's fans buy zero tickets. So not only do you have less interest from fans, because the game is boring, but then you also have a pile of tickets dumped on you by the opponent. So, yes, they offer tickets to companies in order to maintain the sellout.

The point has never been about sold tickets, it has been about a full stadium for every game since 1962. That can't be said most places. Like Texas, which had a half-empty stadium for games this year.

It's hard to believe Nebraska could ever not make a bowl with just having to win 6 games. Nebraska set it in a day when bowl games were harder to get.
