Call me crazy, but methinks Scott Frost took a play from the TO recruiting playbook. He’s going after speed, because “you can’t teach speed...” I just think back to those late ‘80’s/early ‘90’s teams that kept going to the Orange Bowl year after year... then TO recruited speed... they weren’t all NFL draft picks, but damn they made for some great NCAA football. While I have no doubt the current staff will go after and get top notch recruits. I just think they are targeting kids with speed who are willing to learn more than they are targeting the 4 or 5 star kids that are ready to go

He has been all about speed since his Oregon days. You are going to see some smaller sized guys on the field but they will have blazing speed.
Fast. Fast. Fast. When a new offer goes out I no longer look at their rating first. I search Google to find what their track times or or SPARQ time. Then I go to the services.
Frost wants speed. More speed. And even more speed. Never enough speed. And he wants to have several of these speed guys touching the ball throughout a game, every game. No longer will Nebraska depend on one guy getting the ball 25 times a game.
Totally agree. People are really going to have to stop getting so hung up on stars. I mean highly rated guys are great, but we'll be on a LOT of players that will be a bit under the radar but they'll be blazing fast and can be taught. You can't teach speed. Man, I can't freaking wait!
Yep, that’s why I posted it. I think Frost wants speed. You can teach a 3 star kid with blazing speed how to make college reads.
I think the services are focused on the potential of the kid to play at “the next level.” The fact of the matter is, that the NCAA game and the NFL game are not one in the same. One kid may be built to be a stud in college within the right system, but may bust in the NFL. Another kid may be built for the NFL game and may bust in college. More often than not, a stud in college will likely have a solid NFL career, but that is not always the case. I just think at NU, we’re better at b

One of my kid's friends played at Stanford for Harbaugh and they'd say you're not playing a football team, Oregon is like playing a track team.
Speed is incredible to have. However, in the Big 10, they will beat you up. We will have to have the Defense to go along with all that Speed and Fast Play on the Offense. We will need a lot of Offensive and Defensive Linemen who can play, and we will have to have depth there.
Our Defense will be on the field alot. And as Coach Osborne said, Big 10 offenses will line up with two tight ends and sometimes three and run it at you.
They will control the ball, play to win the time on the clock, and beat you physically. We will have to be ready, because it is going to take more than just speed to compete there.
Agree with you. We need speed AND toughness. If we get both we’ll be back in the mix.
This. But I think about Stanford with their hard nosed football and McCaffrey's killer speed hitting seams....that might be where you want to be. Nobody would confuse Stanford with Oregon though. The top tOSU and Michigan and PSU teams over the years have also been combinations of hard nosed football AND speed have they not?
And I really believe that Coach Frost will be able to do that. Speed, Size, Strength and Toughness. Sounds easy typing it out, but will take a few years to get there.
You have to be physically conditioned but these offenses are nothing new to the B1G or college football for that matter. Sure, this version of the spread may not be the most common in the B1G but it's plenty capable of performing. A very similar spread option exists in Columbus and to an extent in Happy Valley.
I'm not worried about the offensive side of the ball, I think once they get things going we'll all enjoy the hell out of it. I'd prefer to avoid having that little UCF defense though.
Absolutely. They have both and do now. With Frost his offense will keep us in the games, and we will get there defensively to compete with those top schools again.
It feels good to talk about competing with those top schools again. Can't wait!

I agree with you regarding offenses. And I don't believe we will be able to compete consistency without a Defense that matches up with the offenses the other Big 10 schools run. We will have to take the pounding. But it sure in not impossible by any means to put that together.
Scott will know what to do. And Coach Osborne will be able to fill in the blanks a little.
Finally a realistic and accurate read. Thank you!! This speed speed speed is not going to be easy to recruit to Neb as it was Oregon or even UCF. Let’s not forget the talent that was already at UCF. 0-12 was not accurate. Look at the record and what contribution the kids made before SF. He landed 1 4*. That won’t fly here. Weighing 165 and running a 4.4 vs. the OSU/mich/PSU kids who run 4.3 and weigh 200 will crush us. I get our bar is win the West in a few years, but dang. We’re losing way better recruits than we’re landing so far.
Thanks for your response. We will get there. I believe that Coach Frost will get enough of the players he wants to Nebraska. And he will transition his offense over time to what he wants to compete in the Big 10.
Defensively, I am not a College Coach. So my opinion only goes to doing a little high school coaching and being a fan for 50+ years.
But my opinion is that we will need Strength and Power in the Defensive Line and Linebackers to compete in the Big 10. The main schools to compete with have that speed and size. We will have to be able to get enough of those kids to Lincoln, and do a better job of developing them than anyone else.
I believe we will be able to do that. Coach Frost will get enough players to Lincoln, and pick up some depth through the walk on program to add some usable players each year.
Oh yeah, and our QB will run the option once in a while.

This board was dizzy thinking when we first joined the B1G we would overwhelm teams with our speed coming out of the Big 12. How did that work out? Speed can be negated. The spread relies on it. There is a video of a guy talking about the Chip Kelly spread and how they led the nation in negative yard plays but also led the nation in rushing yards per attempt or something close. It was a feast or famine O. Frost has changed it up a bit in that regard and has taken some of the predictability out of it. Heck, Chip didn't care if you knew exactly what they were going to run, he didn't attempt to hide it. The Oregon spread was also susceptible to D's that had better athletes up front and in the corners. We will see that in the B1G more consistently than Oregon saw it in the Pac 12 that is for certain. Think about the D's and the hard nosed play in our league compared to the PAC 12. We have a long ways to go folks.

We are going to have to have patience, because to compete consistently in the Big 10 is going to take a few years. A few years means more than 1 or 2, or 3.
We will need to allow Coach Frost to get his players in here and allow the time for them to develop. JUCO players will be essential. And he is showing he knows that already,

I don't know how long it would take myself but I'd have to assume 3-4 years to get things rolling..
I'll be disappointed if he doesn't win 7 next year and 8-9 the year after. There's 7 very winnable games on our schedule next year. With any kind of a defense at all this past season we should have won 7.
We’re so far away from the Big. Let’s win the West in 2 to 3 years and stay within 30 of OSU. At least against their 1stvand 2nd team. If they play their 3rd or 4th string than within 3 TDs.
Frost evolves his offense every year. But the speed stuff will always be a staple of his offense. That isn't going to change.
Some people may not know this but Frost doesn't run the same exact offense that Chip ran. He has already evolved the offense to break the tendencies that Chip had in his offense.

You do realize Urban Meyer just had Riley’s number, right?? OSU is definitely beatable, look how Iowa just chock slammed them down and so on. All we needed was a coach that can teach and develop and we can will start hangin with teams like OSU and PSU. If Frost is as good as we hope and think he is. OSU is done blowing our doors off and then watching a team full of 2-3 star kids in Iowa biotch Slap the Sh_t out of OSU.

Both of these posts display the usual Husker fan pessimism and glumness. “Whoa are we, we stink and have a long way to go before we can stand up to the Big Boys.” Well, respectfully, that’s a load of crap. We have plenty of atheletes — certainly as many or better than Iowa. Decent coaching and reintoducing toughness as part of our culture will make a huge difference. We’ll win 8 or 9 next year, even with a tough schedule. So stop cautioning people abou this or that, and get some optimism back — just as our new coach is doing.

We have recruited in the 4-5 psn in the B1G over past four years. The talent base on the team now should yield more competitive play. Nebraska’s baseline should be 8 wins. The team this year off the bus was 8 wins.
It seems clear now that the coaching was not up to par. It also seems that the coaches themselves were not on the same page.
By their actions in the hours and days after taking over, the new staff is more focused. I look forward to seeing what they can get done in the Spring. There is no reason to be down in the mouth about these kids and this team. I am sure Frost and his staff are not.

This does seem like a bit of an odd take considering that in 2016 we were one overtime touchdown away from the Big10 Championship game.
