but I fully understand why Frost wants Walters - simple fact of implementing his system and Walters has 2 years of experience with it while Williams doesn't.

This could be the sole reason. If Frost wants to win... and win now, then bringing the coaches that have been coaching his system is probably what is best.

Who would be the OC if Walters said no to Nebraska and Williams was the WR coach?

Where's that happening because I don't see it on here? I'd much rather have Williams than Walters, from a pure recruiting and coaching standpoint but I fully understand why Frost wants Walters - simple fact of implementing his system and Walters has 2 years of experience with it while Williams doesn't.

I hear ya, hit me up next time you're in town, we need to have some drinks!
Williams over Walters makes absolutely no sense, but I would like to have both of them. Maybe not bringing over the TE coach or replacing one of the defensive assistants would have allowed Williams to stay. I would have been good with that.

I don't think the toxic culture reasoning makes sense, just as it didn't when Riley took over. It's not really the assistants fault some players didn't work hard. That all starts at the top with the head coach.

I do see a problem brewing with Frost being too loyal to his assistants. There's no room for loyalty in major college football and I hope Frost and Moos both have contingency plans in case things start turning south.

Didn't TO always call the plays as HC? There is beauty in that actually, you never need to worry about an OC leaving..

Agree.

As long as you found a replacement that could see what you need him to see like the previous OC and be able to communicate it with you on the same level during games.

Carrying on the discussion, not trying to shut you out. It's an interesting topic to me so you engaged and I wanted to keep it going. Nothing less or more!

It is an interesting topic with lots of potential viewpoints. I was glad to engage in the conversation and I will reappear in this and future conversations when I feel it is warranted...and when I don’t have early morning basketball practice tomorrow. Winking

Edit: I just wanted to get a look at all of the coaches, names, and positions together since the Nebraska site is not fully updated. I like the mix of coaches, old and young.

Thanks for the edit add, I've checked on multiple devices thinking huskers.com was acting up. Laughing

The mix is good, as is the elephant in the room we won't talk about. IMO, that's just as important at a place like NU.

I'm not too worried about Frost bringing everyone with him, though I'm a bit surprised that all of them came. You'd think with their success the past few years some of the assistants would have put their resume out there (and maybe they did, didn't really pay attention to possible suitors) and see who comes calling, especially with all the job openings this year.

But it appears that these guys truly like working together and getting Nebraska back to a national contender would be icing on the cake as well as proving their abilities for future endeavors when they arise.

One thing I would caution is, and we all know this, the formula that worked with this staff at UCF may not work as smoothly at UNL, although I'm hoping it will. But as we've seen, every situation is different as are the results. Here's hoping to a true smooth transition and much success for the staff and the team for years to come. N

I think it is fantastic. There has been way too much staff turnover in the last 12 years. There will be absolutely no staffer learning on the fly. It will be all teaching, all of the time.

I think we all lied people from the last staff, but in the given situation it was the right time to start fresh. And not with coaches that didn't work for Frost in the past.

One thing I do like is that the recruiting coordinator is coming along. It seems apparent that the new staff has a good idea of how they want to recruit going forward so having that continuity in a short period of time should be beneficial.

The other beneficial aspect is this staff has experience turning a program around and quick. They were able to successfully recruit to their system. There's no learning adjustment as far as who does what, what should be taught etc. It is a staff that hopefully won't have a lot of growing pains and can hopefully speed up the transition process.

Two UCF coaches currently at Nebraska were part of the 0-12 season at UCF so it may be wise to hold off on the 4-8 responses. I'm surprised Scott didn't interview any of the previous NU coaches, especially after what he said when he took over the UCF position.

Click the YouTube link below and fast forward to the 18:41 mark. Pay close attention to coach Frost's response to the question. I am a little concerned how he had this mentality 2 years ago, but not now....

I fully understand trust and continuity as I preach that in my job/career however, it is mind boggling how the resources are available and there wasn't one staff member replaced. I find it extremely hard to believe he has the perfect staff 1-10 otherwise we would've had competition...

Curious on other thoughts?!?

I can understand your concerns but I don't fully share them. There were some good points already brought up. Planored mentioned Frost was not a HC with a staff going into UCF. Blue311blue mentioned Frost knows more about Nebraska then he did about UCF when he was hired two years ago. To somewhat tie to that TwinsRRUs brought up the friends/mentor aspect.

I think all of those are legit. I want to actually focus a little more on his actual quote you point out. Frost said, it would show "tremendous amount of disrespect to people who have worked here long and hard to just dismiss them out of hand..."

That's a really nice statement, but then he went on and kept two coaches from the previous staff. He may have learned something in this process that makes him not want to disrupt the symmetry of his current staff. As he has been a HC for two years with a staff under him, he had to approach this differently. On one hand he can be loyal to his assistants and invite any of them to join him. On the other hand, he could try to keep some coaches who were already here.

Looking at the coaches who were here, I don't believe any had been here more than three years. Frost may not feel these coaches have been here long enough to get the same consideration that he gave the UCF staff when he took over there. This also could have some influence from TO. I believe he was somewhat disappointed in not being consulted during the MR hire. He may have advised Frost to start over, though that is speculation on my part.

The final thing I want to say is Frost has mentioned many times he is bringing in coaches with high character. He may feel that Williams doesn't posses that after his DUI. Again that is speculation. I woudn't have minded keeping Williams or one of two other coaches, but I am not worrying too much at this time that we didn't.

My response was really in response to a specific question of "running to mama" when things aren't going your way. I also didn't say he shouldn't keep any old coaches :p I've learned from experience when taking over failing projects that leaving old leadership in place, even in a different capacity, can make things far worse.

So my thoughts on this are that in the first case, he was taking on his first job as a HC. He was also at a G5 school. He had time to make some assessments and probably didn't have a large pool to select assistants from. I am not sure if he kept them all or brought in new guys? I haven't researched it.

Taking on Nebraska is a whole different situation. Early signing, spotlight on the early days, high profile job, etc. So for one part, he wants to reduce risk and take out variables in his staff. He knows the guys he has. They fit his culture and mentality. He can take that out of the equation and just focus on the program and the players. He has people on board that will have his back at a tough new place. He took everything but the kitchen sink out of UCF, not just the coaches but also the other staff from what I understand?

Another part is his sense of loyalty. I think he shares that with T.O., possibly to his detriment long term. He might feel he owes it to these guys to give them their shot at the next level, money, etc.

Frost is making a massive mistake in letting K Williams go....massive
meh. Short term recruiting wise maybe. Walters is going to have kids who want to follow him too. IF Walters has been Frost's eyes in the booth, that will be very hard to replace IMO.

I think its simple. Two possibilities.
Frost doesnt know williams enough and doesnt have time to trust him from a coaching standpoint, etc. and he simply knows his coaches are studs.

Or

Frost knows and doesnt like his recruiting style. Yes williams was a decemt recruiter but maybe his message to recruits was not what Frost wants it to be. (I have no idea what it was..this is a realistic possibility in any staff)

I think we may be overthinking this. Heck maybe williams is luke warm himself.

Personally, Williams coaching style is lacking. How many sloppy pass routes have we seen this year and lack of effort AT times. Way too many times our receivers did not run crisp routes allowing soft coverage to make plays. But most inexcusable are running routes several yards short of the first down mark with no consequences. You do that and I'm the coach, you better have a good friend with a pair of tweezers because you are going to need both of them to pull the splinters out of your butt from riding the pine.

Careful with the genius tag. Remember when Pelini was labeled a defensive genius?
I said mental genius. I get the impression that his hard drive is large and fast and not close to being full. Has play book memorized front to back and in reverse and could probably kick any of our tails in trivial pursuit

most likely there are some of you that might have more info on Walters, but, i have listened to a couple different radio talking heads that stated it is no secret Walters is interested in a head coaching position. there was a "brief" rumor in SD about Nielsen from USD may be leaving (Kent St?) and Walters name came up as a possible replacement. that rumor has been denied by Nielsen, he has come out and said he isn't going anywhere. anyway, my thoughts are Walters may not be around very long anyway.

Sloppy pass routes? Yikes, you may want to watch as many games as possible, not just Nebraska either, again to get a better understanding of routes. You couldn't be more wrong, yikes.

All across college and pro WR's have routes short of the marker. It's the play design, not the player or position coach deciding on their own.

I sure hope you're joking, or trolling, or something else...

I stand by my post. It's one thing to run an underneath route to try to get open and get yac. But when you are on aroute on 4th and pick your yards to make, and you cut your route off3-4 yards short, you never gave yourself a chance to begin with let alone factor in any comeback yards.

Do you really think he would leave and sit out a year? I know he was close to KW, but you have to think he is close to his teammates and friends at NU too.
He has the Riley and Williams stench on him. We don't need kids that don't pledge their allegiance immediately (this time around)
