Tim Miles: Go or Stay?

Though Tim Miles was the 2014 Big 10 Coach of the Year, that was his only good year here. Of his 5 seasons at Nebraska, 4 of them have had losing records overall and in conference.

I like Miles and he seems to recruit okay, but I think Moos should start assembling a list of potential replacements...

well motion is good our offense not so much. KU runs it some and it works for them....jimmies and joes. We've got some now and our O still doesn't look pretty.
We dont run kansas offense.
We run the "NO motion" offense at NU.

If miles really calls what we do the motion offense then he loves the **** outta irony.

I see more motion and ball movement in some of my 6th grade daughter’s games. I’m not kidding.
I've never liked the "motion" offense but some teams with great talent run it well. We usually don't. We're better in transition when we can get in to it because our offense just doesn't work well. I would prefer to see more high/low screens and pick and rolls. The offense Miles runs he learned in South Dakota as a young college coach. Our high school ran it for years and the only time it worked worth a crap was when we had an all state 6-11 center and a 6-2 guard who could drain shots anywhere from half court in....that was over 30 years ago. They continued to run it until the AD who brought it with him from Miles' stomping grounds finally retired.:(

Or in a couple of weeks. This stretch starting with Sparty is going to be ugly in my opinion.
Sure it will be but we need to see what this team can do through the conference schedule. I've seen flashes of some pretty good play so who knows. IF he can finish in the top 7-8 of the conference you just about have to keep him.

This is Barry Collier and Doc Sadler all over again. Why give him more time when it’s obvious he is not going to get it done here?

I have heard from multiple sources that Moos is a disciplinarian, and does not like Miles at all. If we have another bad season, which is likely, it would not surprise me at all to see him make a necessary move.

No doubt. Top 7-8 is a tourney team. But sadly, I would call that a miracle.
I'm conflicted on Miles. One of my friends is a good friend of Tim's but with the talent we have on the floor this year, I thought the offense would look much better. The only time it does is when we're running IMO.

Go.
I dont need to see the no motion offense anymore to decide.
I would like to see more purposeful movement, screens and offensive teamwork at all bball levels. Too much 1-1 drive into a mess or jack a 3...Yuck. I remember a tourney game, under Danny Nee, where an Ivy League schooled us, relentlessly, with a thing they used to call a "back pick".

He's gone in March. As he should be.
Not if he finishes at or near .500 in the B1G. I don't know if we can do that but who would have thought that team a couple of years ago could make a tournament heading in to those last few weeks of the season.

Not trying to bag on Tim. I like him and want him to succeed and I would truly love to be proven wrong. But the Big Ten is an even tougher conference for basketball than football. Adding Maryland during his tenure certainly didn't help. I just don't see a way for Tim to consistently compete for a tourney appearances and, despite our lack of tradition, that should be the standard with NU's resources imo.

It's going to be tough no matter who the coach is but man our offense is brutal to watch against good talent. :(:( We'll see. We don't need to start the "fire Miles" threads just yet.

We know Moos won’t fire him in mid season. So...I’d say Miles is coaching for his job between now and the end of the season. Moos said he didn’t come here for a 6 and 6 football team...I wonder if a .500 or under basketball team meets his criteria for a change? Smilin’ Tim from Dolan had better figure a way to win some games to avoid putting Moos in the position where he has to make a change. It’s all on him now.

.500 the rest of the way probably gets NU in the NCAA tourney....so yes I think .500 for NU basketball would be fine with Moos.

As I've said a few times here, it's time to set a reasonable target for this season and stick to it. IMO, that means a middle-of-the-pack finish (say, 7th or 8th) in the Big Ten and an NIT bid. If he exceeds that, great. But if he falls short, CUT BAIT.

And I do think this is a very reasonable target - it's not like saying "Sweet Sixteen or you're history" or "Top 4 conference finish or it's over." This is Miles's team, his coaching staff, and he has huge resources behind him. If he can't meet this standard by Year #6, he needs to be shown the door and take Marc Boehm with him.

100% go. He has run his course. .500 or above in conference every other year and get in to NCAA every 3rd year or so and that's progress.
