When looking back at this year, what triggered this coaching change?

I don't think many on this board would think we would of been looking for a new coach at the beginning of the season. We were optimistic that Tanner Lee would take us to a winning season. But after the first half blow out to Oregon and the loss to Northern Illinois, the grumbling began.

Was it after Shawn Eichorst's firing that the NU administration knew we were going to change head coaches?

Or was it after the Wisconsin and OSU slaughters did the administration put into gears the hiring of a new coach?

There had been some chatter that Scott Frost was even visited here in Dallas during his SMU game?

This thing happened so fast my mind is spinning.

I’m certainly not a dude who loves to be mr.hindsight, but I always believed Riley doing well would defy the probabilities. I wish he would have, and I used to say I hope I was wrong about him - but as the adage goes, if it looks like a duck...

If Diaco was not hired I would almost bet Riley would still be here. Things seems to go off the rails during the Ohio St game. During Minn there was no saving it.

I do feel bad for him about that. Seems like he got Diaco forced on him and it was abundantly clear they didn't have the personnel for a 3-4. So you're taking a coach going into year 3 on shaky footing and giving him a system that needs another 3 years to have the guys to pull it off.

The OL and the defense got worse the longer the year went on, that to me is what sealed his fate. The D was clueless and the OL couldn't move anyone. Ozigbo and Wilbon ain't gonna make the NU Hall of Fame but they're not that bad. I watched them and Bradley in the Iowa game and thought, "They look like RBs who don't know if/where their linemen will open a running lane." Out there looking for someplace to run but they weren't really sure where that might be.

All things considered... We came out way better and actually have hope of being a contributor to the playoff in the future so... Why even look in the rearview mirror... Its the most promising situation we have been in since the 90's. GBR!!

REGRESSION over three years and 4 wins in the third. Blowout losses.... loss of Ethic and Ethos.

I would say when it was discovered that there was a contract extension signed and in someone's desk drawer. Personally, Scott Frost was the next coach in unofficial waiting and Riley was only supposed to fulfill his original 5 year contract

Didn’t think it would be quite this bad, but I was never confident about Lee leading NU to a winning season. And that’s not because I think Lee is an awful QB, but when you put an immobile QB behind a sieve of an offensive line it’s not usually a recipe for success. Armstrong had his faults, but he wasn’t running for his life because he needed the exercise.

Can only speak for myself. Just liken Callahan and Pelini, there was a straw that broke the camel's back and I was done. This time it was when we had 1st down on the Northwestern 19 with a 7 point lead and 10 minutes left. We had been running the ball fairly well. At that point Zig was running about 3.5 a carry. One of the best college kickers, a senior was waiting in the wings. The QB was having his usual slightly over 50% completion day, due in a large part by being hurried often. Under those circumstances any competent coach is going to run the ball three times, burn two minutes off the clock (or force timeouts), and make sure the third run ends between the hashes. Assuming NU doesn't get a first down and Brown makes a 30 yard FG, NW gets the ball back with 8 minutes left down 10. But no, Langsdorf runs a pass that has 4 outcomes - make some yards, be incomplete and stop the clock, get sacked and make the FG harder, or get intercepted. We all know what happened. That sequence right there was the Mike Riley era in a nutshell. Outsmarting yourself, ignoring the clock, confused linemen, QB with no discipline throwing it up for grabs, being outcoached (by the blitz), throwing away easy points, and zero awareness of the situation. Once it happened, the defense characteristically folded and gave up big chunks of yards when the other team needed them the most. It was at that point I knew a change had to be made, and I would not feel sorry for the staff one bit when it happened.

Riley had to win certain games this season to keep his job. NIU was one of them. That was when his head was lowered into the guillotine. Northwestern was when the blade was released. He could lose to OSU. He could lose to Wisky. He could lose to Penn State. But he needed to win the others. When he lost to NIU he ran out of second chances.

We were absolutely pathetic from the first game. For me, NIU ended it. I think for Moos it was MN.

That was it for me too. I was always skeptical of the hire but wanted it to work out. That NIU game was just awful from start to finish especially after a pathetic performance against Oregon. I understand teams have bad games but it was just a trainwreck of a game.

For me it was the performance of Lee. Lee was not good but he was MR's QB. I knew were in trouble and doubted from then. Then all the **** play, no position really improved. Losing to NIU then Minn debacle, I was so done.

when scott frost started 4-0, and Florida state and Florida were in the dumps...that is when Eichorst was fired and things put in place to get frost. This poor Riley season will go down as one of the most important events in husker history, as it will be the catalyst for our resurgence.

Will be interesting when Perlman finally relents and gives an interview. I give hi at least two more years before he’s ready to talk to the press in the decisions he made during his tenure.

Like many have said before, it was the day Mike Riley was hired. It was super obvious this would not end well. And if it wasn't for you you should pay a little more attention to college football. I know many here were screaming about what ESPN had pre-season for number of wins but I agreed with them...I thought it would be 5-7 or 6-6....the coaching staff's incompetence surpassed my expectation.

I may be alone in this opinion, but I actually think Lee could do very well in Scotts offense. The biggest problem I saw with Lee was his decision making. If the new coaches can remedy that, Lee certainly has the physical tools to be very good.
