When Riley was hired

As an Iowa guy I didn’t follow it closely, who were some of the names tossed around at the time and was there a general board consensus on who the hire should have been. (ie) Frost this time around. I do recall many didn’t seem thrilled when Riley was hired.

A lot of fans mentioned Frost even then (among others). Riley was a shock that was impossible to spin as a good thing, though some tried.

Apparently anyone but Riley should have been hired...

Frost didn't have HC credentials and some didn't want another HC that was not proven (like Pelini).

Riley's name was not discussed on here until the rumors came out not too long before the hire was announced. No one "wanted" him and he never came to mind until Eichorst.

A coach from coastal Carolina or some such place picked up steam as the coveted "greatest coach you never heard of" then gained wider support when it was revealed that he made millions on Wall Street, I think, and had accomplished miracles as a volunteer coach. He never had a chance.

There were a lot of Tressel backers. I think he would have been better than Riley, but not a great pick either.

Lol. “Some...”

At the time, posters doubting or questioning why Nebraska would hire a 20+ year veteran with a .500 record were ostracized by a certain faction on this board. We were all considered bolievers, pelini-lovers, told to “go back to hph,” etc.

I suppose that’s all in the past now. And I like the fact that most nebraska posters/fans, at least on this board, seem to have come together in a way. For once, there was virtually almost a consensus, and that was the agreement that Riley, while an extremely nice guy and good person, should be put on his horse, and told to ride into the sunset.

Tressel with Frost as OF was a big one.

When Riley was named the only explanation we could come up with is that Frost would be assistant Head Coach and learn from Riley until he retired and then he could take over.

There were rumors that we wanted David Shaw, Gary Patterson, Brett Bielema and Dan Mullen

I remember a lot of names being thrown around, like Chip Kelly and Jon Gruden, proving that some Husker fans actually smoke crack while posting on fan forums. Scott Frost was a popular choice, though three years ago he hadn't proven himself as a head coach at all.

But Frost was coming off a National Title game as a OC, and looks a lot like Lincoln Riley. The new narrative is he has now "proven himself" but the guy had the chops all along. It just looks better today. Either way, just hope Scott takes the job, cuz he's got his work cut out for him. GBR

It’s hard to believe that even Alvarez would have considered MR at Wisconsin since he recommended him to Eichorst.

Don ‘t know how mainy candidates SE interviewed but it could haven’t been very many.
Still baffles me that he would hire a Guy that was going to be fired at a place where he was given many years to be successful.

When Riley was hired, I said WTF? But then thought that maybe he was a fit and he was our coach, I would support him. Didn't turn out that way. I remember names like Tressell and Shaw being thrown around.
Those and as always Paul johnson. Plus Jim McElwain

I don’t believe in conspiracy theories but damn if Alvarez didn’t mastermind a good one with ‘recommending’ Eichorst and Riley as ‘great candidates’ for Nebraska.

Frost was the wanted man from fans but lacked the resume. Probably still does but at least he’s learned from the Oregon experience and now UCF. It’s the safe hire. He’ll be here the next 20 years even if he never wins the Big. Win the West every 4 or 5 years and folks will be fine.

I’m not sure given Nebraska’s recent history with coaches that the scenario you laid out would go over with the masses. Sounds like the Iowa blueprint and on this board Iowa’s level of success is usually scoffed at.

Moos wants to bring us back, not revel in mediocrity like Iowa...

That's it. His appeal also included a reputation as a world class motivator. His players supposedly overcame long odds to achieve victories no one expected. IIRC, under his direction, 2-star and walk-on CC players ate bowls of nails for breakfast and tackled cement columns at practice then demolished opponents on Saturday..... imagine what he could do at Nebraska.:D

That's the way I understood it. Frost's no consideration was that he was a coordinator.
However, the plan for Frost coming back was started at that time etc, etc

Like with the Pelini hire, I was pretty analytical about it at first but bought in to the propaganda. Riley did a very good job of some of the things I wanted to see done at NU but unfortunately as he admitted the on the field results were not good enough. I was hopeful that he would get it done and I do think he had the players in place for us to be much better with Lee with a year under his belt and tons of experience gained by the freshmen and sophomores. We would be one of the most experienced teams in the B1G next year. That said, I have no confidence that Diaco can put a good defense on the field. None.

Even though that doesn't make a bit of sense, it's almost exactly what happened!

Herman was the top asst coach, kind of like Moorhead was this year. I thought him or Mullen would have been good. Moglia would have been really out there, but might have worked if Frost had come as OC and head coach in waiting and paired with a good DC - I was hoping for Dom Brown at the time.
