A coach now or in the past

I believe most of the people are ready to be done with Riley. I know there are a few that still want him. For my own personal knowledge, does anyone know of a ncaa football coach currently or in the past who by year three finished with a .500 record or less for that year. Then went on to have success while at that same program. By success I mean at least a conference championship. If there is someone, that might give a slight hope that Riley could maybe turn things around.

We needed a last second drive to beat Purdue... Not Wisconsin, but Purdue. Our line play on both ends have been atrocious. Shouldn't be the case in year 3.
Come on people, we're Nebraska and deserve the best. We're playing not to finish last.

Brian Kelly went 4-8 last year and could be in the playoffs this year.

Brian Kelly was 12-1 in year 3
I thought he was looking for terrible seasons in year three or later and then a turnaround. Wouldn’t the same logic that says “by year three you should have built to this record” also say “by year seven, you should be better than in year three”.

Things aren’t linear and you don’t always just get better, stuff happens. Look at ND and MSU last year or FSU this year, going to have to stick with a coach through a tough season eventually.

Top coaches have rough years. FSU, MSU, TCU, ND, Frank Beemer, etc.

Now I don't lump Riley with those guys, but yeah.

Also one weird thing is the tenure of coaches anymore. Longest tenured at one school is 18 years, and it's ferentz.

Half right he took over midway through 2008 his second full year they struggled then won 10 in the third year. He also did not have a losing record in his first year like Riley

2014 is what killed him and a large part of that losing season was just piss poor coaching decisions in close games

I'm not necessarily against firing Riley, but this whole thread is pick and choose stats.

-has to be a true, bad 3rd year
-needs a losing first season
-year 5 or so with a bad season doesn't count

I think the point is that yes losing seasons can happen but if a coach has produced before that he gets a little more leeway. In Kelly's point he played for a national title and the had a bad year. Riley did not have or has not had that at NU first year was bad second year ended bad and third year is really bad

Exactly. Don't know why it's so hard for some people to understand.

Steve Spurrier at South Carolina had a similar start, and actually went 5 years of average football before having a 9 win season followed by 3 11 win seasons (was 6-6 in year 3, following 7-5 and 8-5 in years 1 and 2). None of those were conference championships though, nor do I think Riley is on the same level as Spurrier. Just a coach that started similar at his last gig...

Thats the problem It isn't like Riley has had two great season then just fell. This is year 3 of average to below average football teams. No football is not linear, but there is a saying, look to the past to help predict the future. Look at Riley and his 30 years of football. Average to below average teams. Rileys first 3 years at Neb. Average to below average teams. There is a pattern there.

The record isn't the issue....they play a poor brand of football. The LOS leaves a lot to be desired... will there be any draft picks this year?

Not an example for the same program, but Saban was 19-16-1 after 3 seasons at MSU. Roughly a 54% winning percentage.

Barry Alvarez: 11-22 first three seasons. Won the Rose Bowl 4th season. Stuck with him through a 4-5-2 season in his 6th season and then won two more Rose Bowl's in 9th and 10th seasons.

Mack Brown 8-24-1 in first 3 years at UNC. No conference titles, but three 2nd place finishes in 10 years, and was allegedly Bill Byrnes preference to take over for T.O.

But only coaches who started at a school after 2008 count, or something.

Difference with virtually all of these coaches: at the time, they didn't have 23 years of head coaching experience @ a .500 record preceding them.

Yep, I was going to mention that. Most of them it was their first stop, except for Brown I believe and maybe Sherrill.

Mark Dantonio was 6-7 in year 3 and then starting in year 4 went on a decent run. Pinkel was 8-4 in year three and then 5-6 in year 4, then starting in year 7 started a pretty strong run. Mangino was 4-7 in his 3rd year then in year 6 was 12-1 with an Orange Bowl appearance. Schiano started out 2-9, 1-11 and 5-7 and had some success.

It has happened, but more times than not if year three is a dumpster fire the coach is gone that year of the following year.

Bill Snyder 13-20. Not a great example because KSU was arguably the worst D1 job in the county when he took it.

Some good examples here. Also agreed on the 23 years experience part. My question is did those coaches show progress that led ppl to believe they were getting better or did they show the same mistakes over and over and suddenly the light came on? Also was MR ever a 10 year plan coach?

If it takes 10 years to regularly eclipse the 7 win mark, well, yeah...
