Win games and the rankings take care of themselves. Win important games against quality opponents and we will be propelled to the top.
Just win games. Who cares about rankings at this point. Use this as a motivation to prove everyone wrong. It's us against the world and I'm counting on us.

These preseason rankings mean absolutely nothing in real terms, although they do give us a barometer of how far we have fallen in prestige among the journalistic crowd. But that same crowd is notoriously fickle, and they will jump on the NU bandwagon if we start winning games that matter.

I do not think there is the slightest animus against NU by the journalists. In fact, many of them really do want Nebraska to be good again. They think college football is a better sport when traditional powers like Nebraska and Norte Dame do well. Just look at the fact that we were rated as high as 8th in the nation last year due to our 6-0 start even though everyone and their blind dog could see it was a very shaky and suspicious 6-0. But had we beaten Wisky we would have shot up even higher.

The reality, therefore, is simple: just win baby.

On college football XM radio a day or two ago (Freddie and Fizz maybe), they talked about the Huskers and how we now have a QB to fit the system and there is no reason to believe that our offense will not be better than last year and the defense should be decent.

They compared TLee to Mannion as far as fitting Riley's system.

They talked about our schedule a little and said Ark St is a decent team not to sleep on, but that we should win easily.

They said if we can beat Oregon, then we should start 5-0 and should have a good chance to beat Wisconsin. If we beat them, we should have some good momentum going into the OSU game.

They said of course we beat Purdue and that Northwestern is going to be tougher than people think this year.

Overall they thought there is no reason not to expect this team to get to 9 wins.

If that happens, we will be ranked higher than we are starting.

Was Mannion the best QB Riley had as far as records go?

Was Mannion the best QB Riley had as far as records go?

RS frosh Started 10/12 games in 2011 (3-9)

2012 200/309, 2,446 yards 15 TD's/ 13 INT's (9-4, finished ranked 20 in AP poll)

2013 4,667 yards and 37(!) TD's/ 15 INT's (7-6 record)

2014 3,100 yards, 15 TD's/ 8 INT's ( 5-7)

He was a starter one of the best teams Riley had at OSU (2012).

Kellen Moore was the starter on his 2006 10-4 team.

Since you basically have to win the conference or finish 2nd to get anywhere meaningful, I pretty much don't care about the polls other than to hype up ABC's broadcast of #17NU vs #18 Oregon or whatever.

CFB is basically the NFL in bowl logistics now.

Just like their revised recruiting ranking last year...
I really think it has been a while since we were this forgotten maybe 2008?? but for a team coming off a nine win season we are not thought very much of and yes it is disappointing. Even with a new QB you would think we would get a little more love than this.
One thing I see is that the media although they will be quick to point out Riley is a nice guy they are far from being on the Riley is a really good coach bandwagon

We need a good season desperately I have reservations about our Oline and the ability of Langsdorf to not be tempted to pass 50 times a game now that he has a passing QB. If we are passing that much it will be along season. I am hopeful about our defense taking a step forward this year.

I am hopeful for this year but it is time for Riley to show what he can do - preseason rankings do not mean much but they do give an idea of what other coaches think of your program and by extension your coaching abilities
Starting the season ranked #39 is lowest rank preseason for any NU football team since the 1960's that includes 2008 with a new coach coming off 2007 at #36 and 2005 coming off a losing season in 2004 at #37

For a team that won 9 games, have a well thought of QB and hired a top DC in the off season along with returning a decent amount of starters - for the coaches to vote us #39 is very much a vote of no confidence in Mike Riley if they thought highly of his coaching abilities and that of his staff we would be higher and that is simply fact. especially considering many other team and some with losing records last year are voted higher

Its time for Riley to show he is actually a good coach this year and while this post will generate a bunch of "Why are you so negative" replies - I am actually in the corner that thinks he will show us he is on the right track this year

The coach's poll and the AP poll are antiquated anyway. The media guys have a tendency to vote regionally and the coach's have a staff member do it or the SID.

There is only one poll that really matters anymore and they don't even release a poll until the season is 2/3 done. If Nebraska is able to win games, they will be ranked in that poll. If they aren't, they won't.

That is correct and his seat was getting warm - but he was also coming off 7-6 year and had a soph QB who had basically not played at the college level - lets hope they are wrong about Riley also

So if you have an unknown QB situation they may not rank you as high? Weird

So the coaches all thought James Franklin couldn't coach last year?
Yeah, I get this but that win against OSU was flukey as can be. Still a win, I know.

I do find it odd how coaches/media used to jock up Riley sooooo much at Oregon State "less with more" and "Best coach you never heard of" and "So respected for what he has done and can do" but now all of a sudden he seems to get much less respect.

Some of you act like your individual manhood is challenged if the football SIDs don't vote for your team. ITS A PRESEASON POLL. the same poll that Nebraska was just receiving votes in last year before climbing all the way to 6th and 7th.

It is not a matter that the preseason polls matter - of course they dont the record will determine where we end up. However they are a gauge on how the rest of the country looks at your program and in many cases are vote of confidence on a particular coach especially a new coach - Herman and Texas are good indication of this.

I didnt say I believe we end up ranked 39 but it is an indication the the coaches( or whoever votes) and the media are not very high on a coach who won 9 games last year

It's sarcasm. You see Nebraska has an unknown at QB this year as well.
Nebraska has a QB who has already played college ball and was known in to be a talent in QB camp circles and pro scouts - Mcsorley had attempted 40 passes in his college career - its a little different

What do people question about the season? Will the QB do enough to be successful. It doesn't matter if he played 30 games or 0. The people voting in this poll are questioning Lee at QB. If tommy Armstrong was back for a 3rd year under Riley, following a 9-4 year, they would have received more votes.
