The loss of a teammate is a polarizing event in any organization

These players are getting a new perspective of their coaches. Remember they have only had about 18 months together, their relationship was thrust on them, not necessarily a two way street in the beginning.

On the outside looking in, these coaches seem to be strong character men, and an event like losing a friend and teammate, might cement a stronger bond in this team as a whole, and with their coaches. I would say a leader that is "fake" and doesn't really care about their team could destroy a team during times like this. You could lump Eichorst into the equation also.

I believe Sam's character will shine through, and by all accounts they are all better people for having known him.

I am confused by your title as the word "polarizing" is the opposite of bringing together. I hope you mean that it will further bring the team together and not that a loss "is a polarizing event...".

I lost a Co worker that sat next to me for over 10 years. We were in an open space, so i don't mean over the wall next to me.

He was a key player in our group. Well liked by all.

The event was polarizing. As in it moved those left behind into groups. The team rallied around each other, but it took a long time to trust some of the management again. They really didn't know how to lead us through that shock.

I know the situations are different, we are adults, their young men, but my point is that real compassion and leadership can bring a group together for a purpose. The opposite could fracture and destroy things. These young men will quickly see through a facade and not perform for this staff

Polarizing is the term I would use either, not at least in Nebraska case. I believe what happened will bond the team togeather and it will make for a strong team chemistry which you're pointing out in the first place.

They will find strength in this terrible accurence that has shocked and saddened Husker Nation.

I'm not worried about the players or staff coming together. The only polarizing thing I could see is that if things don't go as planned this season, someone on this board will use this as an excuse of some kind to further their agenda.

Make no mistake, the loss of Sam Foltz's skills as a punter and holder may very well cost us a game or games. He was a steady leader. IF it happens I hope people take a breath before they lambast the guy that has to try to fill Sam's shoes.

Definitely agree with this. Drew Brown is the person I worry about the most. I had kind of forgotten until this week that Sam was the holder on field goals too. The two had become very close and he expressed some feelings of guilt because the accident was one of the rare times the two of them didn't do something together, plus the fact that he was one of the first people to discover the accident. I had also kind of forgotten about the fact that Sam was injured in the BYU game last year and Drew said after the game that he was shaken up about it and he thought it led to him missing two FGs in that game. I already think he didn't get enough credit from some fans for how much he improved over the season, and I just really hope people take it easy on him and any of the players for that matter.
We really don't know how they will react-we can hope that they use it as a rallying point and if I had to guess, I think they will. But it could very well go the other way too. I hope more than ever that people are mindful of what those players are dealing with and take it easy on them.

Nikki, It seems as if you think you're job is to keep everyone on the board honest, and so you go through threads and make sure to point out what people will say if things go sideways...

But I gotta tell ya, that's not necessary. You're line in the sand is abundantly clear. everyone knows where you stand. Please don't tell us in each thread what you think people will say. It gets old.

You don't see any of us going through each thread saying, "if we don't get a recruit soon Nikki is gonna point out where our current recruiting class sits..." Although anyone could.

Just sayin'. Let the season play out. If people complain about this or that, guess what? It's a message board! It's gonna happen no matter what!

Edit: obviously you aren't holding people's feet to the fire in every thread, and you do show some positivity at times as well, it's just that frequently when I see something posted from you it's in a challenging way.

I have no problem with it mostly. But I thought maybe it could be put on hold after the players, and program lost a great kid in a terrible accident.
Guess not

Nope, I was trying to figure out what the OP polarizing angle was and thought of one, and specifically did not go into detail..

By the way, I heard Nick on 1620 the other day (Saturday replay?), he was already heading down the path I was afraid of.. basically saying we could now justify seeing one or two additional losses this year because of the punting situation.. paraphrasing

Polarizing is when a head coach is fired and several people loved the head coach and won't rally around the new guy. That leaves us with two opposite groups. This is death we are talking about so the likelihood of it being polarizing is about 1%. Probably less.

Yeah, i could have probably used a different term. Not everyone has experienced a sudden loss like that in a team setting, i have. I probably did not articulate very well that poor leadership in a situation like this can destroy a team. The inverse is true, a strong leader or culture can lead to results people didn't think were possible minus the teammate.
My experience was centered around a leadership void, a lot of trust was lost.

No hidden agenda for me. I want them all to heal and band together like brothers. Outside looking in, i think the coaches are going to be a strong influence. I hope appearances are not deceiving.
