SIAP - Seriously, where is Wilbon?

I want to love Newby, and I do love that they ran him over and over in the South Alabama game to see if he could get it rolling. But he just doesn't see the cuts. He cannot see the running lane and attack it. Rex or Ameer would have been over 275 yards in that game.

What did Newby do that he's getting ZERO carries?

It made me INSANE to watch Newby run outside zone on Saturday and miss Lane 1, miss Lane 2, and then wind up at the sideline with nothing. He's constantly trying to run on the face-side of his blocker instead of the back-side of his blocker. Force the defender to run THROUGH your blocker to get to you! Sweet bastard!

This is why I always yap about "vision" when I see a recruit's HS film. Watch Rex again. Watch Ameer again. Not their Husker film, their HS senior tape. They see where the correct cut is, and they make it AGGRESSIVELY to maximize yardage. They did clear back in high school.

Newby is out there wobbling back and forth, and waiting for the perfect scenario before he's ready to get north & south. That's just who he is. He can't see it. He doesn't understand the one-cut physics like Rex did that turns a 1 yard run into a 6 yard run. That is more valuable over the course of a game than trying to push your luck all the way to the sideline to turn an 8 yard run into a touchdown.

Judging off the coaches comments either Wilbon is dealing with some stuff off the field or he is struggling to grasp the playbook.

I don't know how bad you gotta be in pass pro before that's hurting the team more than Newby and Cross both being just awful at executing zone. At least Cross will put his head down and run hard if you call power, Newby just looks soft. He looks scared to put his foot in the ground and stick his shoulder into somebody if the blocking isn't perfect.

Give me a back who can maximize the run called on 1st and 2nd down and let Newby be just a SUPER 3rd down back. Think B-Jax and Marlon Lucky.

Yep, and I will echo the title of the thread! Seriously where is WILBON!
Same thing as when receivers never use to see the field unless they could be beast run-blockers. Except now, if he misses a block, it puts our qb (who is carrying this team) in peril and could get him hurt. The young man will figure it out in due time. 4 games in and the people bitching about pass-blocking seem to be the same people that would excuse receivers from seeing time until they became glorified tackles 15 yards down the field.

Miss a block on the blindside and Tommy could be gone for the season. Ponder that concept while I also ponder if Wilbon gets us more yards carrying the rock than Newby/Cross...

Give me more FB runs and receptions. It looked like the defense was clueless what to do with Janovich.

Watching Newby more and more he is starting to remind me of Marlon Lucky. Great athlete who might push the 1,000 yard mark rushing, but probably isn't going to get much more than that. Hopefully I am wrong, but he just doesn't have big play written on him like other great backs at NU.

I just watched the game replay. Newby is actually a very good blocker both in pass pro and on QB runs. Stick with him and he may improve.

Riley said a RB that can't pass pro is a LIABILITY. He mentioned he wanted to get the true frosh some carries too so don't expect to see Wilborn again this year unless a blow out or injuries come up.

If Wilbon doesn't play again all year, any chance at all that he stays at Nebraska? Kid looked great the first game. You'd think he could make enough progress in pass pro to start getting a little time by the end of the year?

Neither Riley said it was based on his pass protection not being where it needs to be. Translation, Tommy would get killed.
While I agree completely with this assessment, the next time Tommy tries to hurtle a linebacker could be the last down of football he ever plays.

I just hope the coach is letting him know this is a bad idea.
