He's likely just there to eat up some outs in low-leverage situations, in order to ease the workload on the Royals' relievers who will be pitching in the postseason. From that standpoint, it could be a good move. It can also spare the Royals from putting a minor-league prospect on the 40-man roster, which can have service time and Rule 5 Draft implications for that player.

Of all the things I would guess him to eat...outs would be towards the end of the list.
