Such a better way of doing it than Coach K and his retirement tour.

Definitely.

This is the proper way to retire.

It completely puts the school, current players, and incoming signers in scramble mode to figure out what is next. Commits signed with the expectation Wright would be there. This is 4-6 weeks after the point when many schools look for coaches and the 'good ones' that were known to be available are spoken for.

Meanwhile, there was a known transition plan for Duke. Current players, commits, and recruits all knew what to expect who would be the next coach.

One approach leaves chaos and uncertainty behind.
The other approach leaves a calm and known plan of action behind.

I am not knocking Wright. He should do what's best for him- he clearly earned it. But from just a transition plan approach, one is clearly better than the other for everyone left behind.

Great point.

They have already named a replacement. Fordham coach Kyle Neptune, who was a longtime assistant at Villanova before going to Fordham. Sounds like this was the plan all along or Wright gave some advance notice and allowed them to have the replacement in place as soon as he announced. Of course, this really sucks for Fordham the most. Now they probably just have to promote a current assistant.

Knowing your coach is leaving a year in advance is much better than being surprised on a random Wednesday.
