New or used SUVs

My wife’s 2014 Pathfinder has developed a shudder in transmission the last couple of weeks. Already had one transmission replaced about 77K. It is at 147K now. Think it may be time to be looking.

Our budget probably will be 50K/6 year range. We are not set on a particular brand, but almost certainly won’t be a Nissan.

What y’all got for recommendations in the mid size SUV range?

Toyota/Lexus. Assume you can get either new in the 50k range, depending what you consider mid size (highlander, Rex, etc).

My brother in law swears by the Toyota/Lexus SUVs. He's bought multiple used for my sister and all his kids and has never had any problems with any of them. And several were in the 200,000 mile range when he got rid of them.

Since 2009 I have owned:
2007 4Runner
2011 Grand Cherokee
2014 Grand Cherokee
2021 4Runner
2021 Acura MDX

The Grand Cherokee is the best of those.
The 4Runners are good, it great. The newer ones are boxy and drive a little awkward.
We got the MDX because it had a 3 row option. I hate driving it. It has a ton of self controls that drive me insane. We are going to trade it in later this year for a Grand Cherokee.

Wife is in an Overland Grand Cherokee. It’s been fine. It rides well and it’s very comfortable on long trips.

Hmm. We got a 14 pathfinder too. That's not good. Recently got an armada to replace out explorer. I like the new Nissans a lot

We went Hyundai Palisade (Caligraphy). Best value for the money in my opinion. And yeah.. I was skeptical about a Hyundai at first.. not now :)

Best warranty in the business.

I bought my daughter a used sonata for her first car and bought her a new one when she went away to college. Great cars. I have no doubt that the Pallisade is sweet.

We got a 2020 MDX. I hated it at first too based on the controls that you mentioned. Have since gotten used to it. Great car. Very comfortable. Drives nice as long as you remember to turn your blinker on for every lane change

Almost bought one about 6 months ago. Regret not doing it. I'll pull the trigger in the next 12 months. Great vehicle.

My wife just got the RDX and I love driving it. Of course I'm used to a F-250, so big difference. Great car so far

I forgot to add: THis comes with a tax credit of up to $7500. Combine that with very little maintenance cost, and this cost of ownership will be lower than many of the other vehicles mentioned here. Have trouble with transmissions? Get a vehicle without one!

We bought a loaded Palisade 2 years ago. Was definitely most bang for our buck at the time - we test drove everything in that size range with 3 rows. It had more features than anything else for 50k. I'm sure other brands have started catching up by now, but if you're shopping for something 1-2 years old it's still going to be hard to beat. Kia Telluride is basically the same thing, we just liked the Palisade more and the Tellurides were harder to find at the time we bought.

If you drive a lot of highway miles, that thing is a dream out just cruising down the interstate. No complaints so far.

Bought my wife a 4Runner because it has rear wheel drive. Great for towing a boat and going down boat ramps. Just don't take it on long trips or you'll have back pain.

Lincoln MKX is what I drive. Love it for long trips because the seats fit like a glove. All seats are heated, front seats are air conditioned and the back seats fold down electrically. The tailgate opens with a wave of your foot under the rear bumper. We researched for 3 months before I decided on the Lincoln. Seat room, luggage capacity, comfort and features all fit my needs. Got 40,000 in with only oil changes and gas.

We bought a 2021 Honda Pilot brand new in OCT. 2020. I loved that thing. Used Car Market exploded and we sold our year old pilot for 2k more than we bought it for. My wife thought she wanted a minivan with more space since adding another kid to the family. She drove it for a couple months and hated it. Sold it to Carmax for more than we paid for it (got lucky there), and ended up buying a 2022 Hyundai Palisade. It's a very practical vehicle and we got it at MSRP. I love toyota myself, but we both thought the palisade gave us a little more space compared to a highlander and we're too poor to buy a sequoia lol.

Highlander it is. We went with the hybrid. 38 mpg was eye catching. Thing is pretty damn. sweet.

The wife has driven Toyota 4 runners since 2005. The last one had 267k on it when she traded. Now she's in a TRD Pro and absolutely loves it. We've taken 2 trips over 8 hours in it and no issues with ride or comfort.
