With this new transfer portal, it seems like it would be easy money to find one really good kicker (and punter) from a non power 5 school that wants to play in the SEC. What’s the problem?

It’s a serious question. There are FCS and D2 kickers that are better than ours. We play in the top conference in America. So this new transfer portal should make it easy to bring a better kicker up every year if need be.

There are varsity kickers better than ours. Hundreds of them across the country. No ******* excuse for a kicker at this level to miss anything inside 40 yards.

I'll give you some...poor long snappers and bad holds. Our special teams are "special" in more ways than one. Still don't know the logic behind not using Ruiz there at the end.

We have a transfer kicker, he missed two FGs yesterday.

He’d hit 28/34 FGs his soph & junior seasons, which is about as good as we’ve ever had. Only 3 of those misses were under 50 yards.

The short miss yesterday was his first miss ever inside 30, and only second miss ever inside 40.

I’ve said before that the best money our AD could spend is on a sports psychologist. We crumble under pressure way too much. I think it would benefit many of our athletes.

Evan Sobiesk was one of our best kickers..
He was a good and Dak made him better with consistency of his holds.
I’m wondering how consistent our holds are…???

I’ve never understood coaches reluctance to giving a really talented K a scholarship. I get that they aren’t “real football players”, but they dang sure have real impacts on the results of football games. And it’s not like rosters don’t have a bunch of wasted scholarships in the 85.

Heck, based on how bad Ole Miss has looked with our backups playing meaningful snaps on offense, I’d venture a guess that they have 25-30 non-SEC caliber scholarship players right now.

Hopefully they’ll be talking to shrinks four hours a day M-F and when not doing that, kicking field goals the rest of the day. One job. That’s it. Put it between those two sticks.

Did you not see what he did on the two earlier attempts? Or did you forget the “***”?

The last snap and hold didn’t look clean to me while watching live. I haven’t re-watched to determine if that was the case, or not.

Agree.
kid has been hurt. You have to think he’s still not 100%. Not really an excuse since he’s out there. That 23yd miss was a head scratcher.
still no way I would have ran McCord out there, unless Ruiz was truly hurt.

snapper sucked too

2 of the 3 holds were iffy yesterday…Ruiz has been hurt most of the season and I suspect he’s not doing much kicking during practice…but I knew as soon as he was setting up for the 23 yarder it was going to be a miss, the ball went exactly where he was lining up for it to go.

The holds are usually pretty good but I’m not a fan of Day as a punter. Way too inconsistent and who the 17 punts the ball nose down on purpose even when your NOT trying to high pooch it?!?!
Still wish we had a punter that would just punt the damn ball out of bounds instead of trying to back it up like a 9 iron. Usually doesn’t work out too well.

Bad holds are all the more reason to can the ST coach. You can only coach kicking accuracy and distance so far. Snap and hold can be drilled to near perfection.

I’ve noticed Mac Brown at Ole Miss (who’s a very good punter) doing this, too. It seems to have only started recently, but it looks to me like they’re doing it to make it more difficult to catch. I first noticed it at Tennessee, and they muffed the first punt and Ole Miss recovered. He did it once against Auburn, too, and they muffed it and Ole Miss recovered. I’m sure he’s done it more and I just wasn’t really paying attention because it was uneventful, but I bet that’s why Day is doing it.

In the modern game (especially with your defense) you’d sacrifice 6-7 yards on average if it doubles or triples your chances of them not fielding the punt cleanly.
