That should’ve been a triple. Why didn’t they send the runner home? I never saw a good view of where the ball was. Obviously it worked out, but what happened there?

Hatcher got a bad jump and had to wait and see if the ball was going to be caught. You don’t send the runner in that situation unless you are 100% sure he will make it home. You can’t afford an out at home plate with Allen coming up to bat.
It was an egregious base-running error by someone. Whether it was on Rowdey or Hatcher, or whether both got bad advice from Cheesebrough I’m not sure…but you can’t ever run that far past 2nd base without confirmation that the guy is moving from 3rd. Signals got crossed somewhere. Fortunately, it worked out.
Im going to be honest here…. But that ball (along with Cumbests RBI triple against Texas) should’ve been caught. CFer took a horrendous route to that ball that seemed to just float a little as it got out there. Thank God is got over his head.

The angle from the line between first and second makes that hard to read if the centerfielder is close to that ball. I think Hatcher did right. Then you can't get out 2 at home so I agree with the conservative play by the coach because I don't think Hatcher is a plus runner. Rowdy has to read the runner in front of him.

The question is not whether or not Hatcher should have been sent. The problem was when Hatcher arrived at 3rd. He should have been rounding 2nd when the ball was missed and he would have easily scored. He slowed before 2nd and then the ball was missed. Getting that run in that situation (and having Rowdy on 3rd) could have been the difference in our winning or losing. Fortunately, it was not.
Bottom line, it was a baserunning error by Hatcher. And had the ball been caught, he would have had plenty of time to retrace his steps back to 1st to not be doubled up.

Hatcher's run didn't matter there. You had TA coming up with the tying runs on. It wasn't worth risk of getting hatch thrown out (and it would have been a close play).
Rowdey is the one who made the mistake because he didn't pick up the 3b coach. Thankfully Virginia's defense fell asleep there.
It was 4-2, top of the 8th, and "Hatcher's run didn't matter there"???? It absolutely mattered and not getting it could have been huge. In addition, Rowdy would have been on 3rd with 1 out--a TA pop fly would have then tied the game.

No, it didn't matter on THAT PLAY. If TA gets a hit they both score, so you don't want to erase one of them before he gets the chance.
What you guys are missing by griping over that play by Hatcher is that there was a very good chance that he would have been a dead duck at home. If he gets thrown out in that spot, it's catastrophic.

He was in the perfect spot, about 2/3s of the way between first and second, waiting to see if the ball was caught. The second the ball got by the center fielder, he was off like a rocket. Rowdey was running full speed the whole time. Rowdey is the one who almost blew it. He should have looked up sooner. We're really fortunate that it didn't cost us. UVa's first baseman should have been following the play and should have been standing on second to tag Rowdey when he returned.
No, Allen had third easily because the throw was going home. And the ball was not still in CF. It was going to be bang/bang at the plate and you don't take that chance and throw away a rally chance in that spot.
Cheese was right. Hatcher was right. Rowdey can't go into business for himself - he has to pick up his 3b coach there. I'm sure he was reminded of that later, along with a scolding for showing up his coach.

He had to. He couldn't tell if the CF was going to catch the ball. Their CF almost got to that. What he did there was textbook.....go 3/4ths of the way and read the play.

I was thinking this too . . . where was the first baseman on that play?
I watched the play again, and the first baseman was the cutoff man for the throw to home plate. Thus, he was on the infield grass near the pitcher's mound when he cut off the throw.
The shortstop was out on the outfield grass as the cutoff man for a throw to 3rd base and the second baseman was backing him up. (I think this is the typical play on a ball driven to left-centerfield that gets over the centerfielder's head.)
Because Hatcher was on 1B when Rowdy hit the ball, the first baseman had to be the cutoff for the throw home. This left nobody to cover 2B when Rowdy overran the bag.
If Rowdy had hesitated another 1/2 second before returning to 2B, then the first baseman would've been able to tag him.
