Two things are true here:
1. College athletes do not truly drive the value of the product. You put these exact same players out on the field but call them the NFL Minor League Starkville Bandits and Tuscaloosa Wildcats, they are going to get 5% of the interest that Mississippi State and Alabama do. The college/alma mater/nostalgia is what drives the majority of the value of NCAA athletics.
2. NCAA financials have gotten grossly out of hand. It’s not fair to have a system where so many administrators and coaches are getting insanely wealthy while the players get very little in comparison.
If the NCAA wanted to keep this genie in the bottle, they should have long since had salary caps for coaches and administrators, limits on insane contract buyouts and golden parachuted, and then funneled the remaining surplus into improvements in the student athlete experience, outside of high player salaries, increase in scholarship counts, and then just reinvesting the remaining surplus into academics. I’m afraid this genie isn’t going back in the bottle though. And it will make it much harder for schools like Mississippi State to compete for championships.
