I don't think that's overdramatic. The best part of his performance was his ability to recalibrate after he lost his command a little in the 4th. He was probably at his best in the sixth.

The most astonishing thing is the strikeouts. An umpire with a big zone helped (that one call Sims didn't get in the 9th notwithstanding), but Bednar and Sims were both throwing nasty stuff today. Bednar's glove-side slider was lethal and I don't think Texas has anyone on their roster that can catch up to high heat from Bednar, or Sims for that mattter.

The only time Sims got hurt was when he fell behind and took something off a fastball that got hit for the HR, and he hung a slider for the base hit to left.

ETA: Madden was very good for Texas, too, but I think we made him look better than he was. We let him off the hook a good bit.

That’s as well pitched game as you will see. All 4 pitchers were dominant. But one was even more dominant.

Given the stage it’s probably the best pitcher’s duel in our history. Stratton-Gausman in 2012 comes to mind but that was the first game of conference play in mid March (we also lost).

It was a game I hope I never forget. Masterful performance by Bednar, and Madden was extremely good as well. You can even extend that to the relievers, both Sims and Hansen had great stuff tonight.

Bednar was superior on a bigger stage, but I watched Chris Stratton strikeout 17 in 8.2 innings of work at LSU back in 2012. Our relief couldn't finish it, though, and we lost 3-2 in 10 innings. Still, the pitching was dominant that night. Nola had 10+ Ks for LSU, too.

Of course. It was tongue in cheek, but I also had a point: TDA is a wonky field because of how unique it is. Defenses have to get used to it. A lot of teams struggle, and some teams lose because of defensive miscues and don’t stay long enough to get used to it. With 8 teams playing in Omaha, the one that averages 12+ K/9ip has a distinct advantage compared to other venues. People like to say fly balls play because it is hard to hit home runs, but on some days the ball does jump out. And on most days you see outfielders struggle with the big outfield. The infield plays differently than most of these teams’ home surfaces. So compared to fly ball pitchers, ground ball pitchers, strikeouts play in this park. I’m just saying: Strikeouts have served us well all season. They may serve us in Omaha more than anywhere else.

No doubt. I think he pitched himself into the 1st round. I love having the draft later in the summer. In the past, a performance in the Supers or CWS couldn't do anything to help draft stock.

I was around the program in 2007 and we had a dinner with both teams the night before the Super Regional started. The draft also started that day. Their game one starter was a top 5 pick and we had Ed Easley that had also just been taken in the first round. I vividly remember standing near the Clemson guy and thinking this guy just had his life changed today and he's eating dinner at the Palmeiro Center.

Yeah, ESPN had him projected in the 1st round before game but I don't think he was a lock before. I think with the way he pitched he'll now have Fishwater99 money***
