"On Saturday in Dublin, Ohio, golfer Jon Rahm was 24 hours away from $1.7 million. He had cruised through the first three rounds of the Memorial Tournament with a six-stroke lead. He was locked in. He was healthy. Until he was informed that, despite what his body told him, he wasn’t healthy.Rahm, who reportedly hadn’t been vaccinated prior to a COVID-19 exposure earlier in the week, tested positive for the virus, the result coming in the middle of his third round. He was forced to withdraw from the tournament and forfeit his likely winnings. His stunning, emotional exit prompted all sorts of questions, including: If Rahm felt well enough to play, and if his competitors were either protected by vaccination or unconcerned by the virus to an extent that they would refuse vaccination, why couldn’t Rahm play on?"

Why couldn't he have just played by himself and carried his own bags? It's golf. He doesn't have to be within 6 feet of anyone to play.

He probably could have played alone without it causing an issue, but that's no allowed under the PGA Covid protocol. I'll bet he knew the PGA rules and decided to take the chance and not get vaccinated. His luck ran out.

He should have got the vaccine. That's 100% on him.

You must have missed a lot in the last 15 months. You think the PGA, any professional sports association, or any employer in general is going to consciously let someone show up to work while having COVID? Enormous liability issues abound….not even to mention the optics of it.

Golfer tests positive for COVID? He isn’t competing until he’s clear of it.

NFL player tests positive….he isn’t competing until he’s clear of it.

Burger flipper at McDonald’s tests positive….he isn’t working until he’s clear of it.

Rahm knew the risks damn well, chose to assume them, and it bit him in the ***. It sucks that he was about as unlucky as one could be on the timing of it, but I don’t feel like anyone can say he got screwed. At the end of the day, he screwed himself.

I can just imagine someone telling Jordan he couldn’t play a game 7.

So the results came in mid round

And they deemed it safe enough to let him keep playing without warning his caddie or playing partner. This tells me they aren’t really concerned with any health risks of COVID. Why not let him play a 18 more holes the next day? 7 holes after a positive test is safe, but not 25?

John Rahm gets to choose whether he wants the vaccine or not

The pga gets to choose on how they make the rules

John Rahm made a decision that cost him. I’m glad he gets that choice.

And people test positive after the vaccine. So the vaccine isn't guaranteed to prevent it. Same as the mask.

Understood but the pga gets to make their own rules. They should.

John Rahm gets to weigh the risks and decide. I don’t really like their rule in the case of golf but John Rahm knew them ahead of time and decided. It’s cost him.

He wouldn’t have even been tested if he had the vaccine. Would have been a total non-issue either way. Whether you agree or disagree with it, that’s the protocol and all the players (including Rahm) knew what to expect.

The confirmation test result didn’t come until 6:05 PM when he was on the 18th fairway. He took only 2 more putts before finishing the round after the test result was final.

So two strokes is acceptable but not 66? Also, did he only take one test? I thought he had previously had one positive test and this was the second.

ETA: I don’t have a problem with him being forced to withdraw. He knew the rules. I do think the rule is all for show.

He got what he signed up for. I'm sure the rules were clear. It 100% sucks, but that's how the cookie crumbled.

They told him the official test result at the first available opportunity. I’m not sure what else you wanted the tour officials to do….send a strike team in biohazard suits to helicopter him off the 18th fairway? As opposed to letting him proceed on his own down the final ~200 yards to the normal point of egress from the course?

Yes, there was a first positive test, but the second confirmation test is what the PGA tour uses to determine final diagnosis, that’s all based on the CDC guidance which changed months ago to cull out false positives. I’ve seen no evidence to say they didn’t notify Rahm’s caddy or playing partner. I’m also not sure whether or not they are supposed to, based on the protocol.

In any case, the PGA followed their protocol for all of the above. There is no evidence to suggest otherwise. Rahm knew the protocol….knew that if he didn’t do X, Y might happen. He didn’t do X, and Y did happen. End of story.

While I get your point and Rham had a chance to get a vaccine to avoid alll this. The guy at McDonald's isn't getting tested if he's asymptomatic. Which rham was.

It's not the worst golf 17ing I can think of... DJ at the PGA at Whistling Straits in 2010 was a bigger 17ing. No reasonable person would have known that was a bunker with all the fans in it.

Except it was posted in the locker room in the rules all week. Basically the same as Rham. Dustin just didn't pay attention to the rules. Rham chose to not get vaccine. And I have no problem w him not. I haven't gotten it either. Not going to. But I'm not playing for millions either. I might in that case.

The guy at McDonald's will get tested if contact tracing shows he was exposed...which is the same thing that happened to Rahm.

I was surprised there wasn't more discussion of Whistling Straits during the PGA. At Whstling Straits, any patch of sand was considered a bunker. At Kiawah, nothing was a bunker...

Craig Stadler's towel was worse in my opinion. But it's golf. Rules are rules and it's well known in golf the rules do not bend.

Reminds of the social distancing rule, up to 6 ft is ok, 6.1 feet not ok. Social gathering up to 10 people its ok, 11 is not!

Are the PGA players tested every day of the tournament? The Monday of the Tournament? My issue is if the test results doesn't become available until Saturday, what good is it? They should have a clean test BEFORE they put tee in the ground on Thursday. At the end of June they will no longer test. Here is the paragraph about those who do NOT get vaccinated.

"For those who are not vaccinated, testing will remain a condition of participation. However, on-site testing operations will discontinue at the end of June. Once those operations stop, non-vaccinated players will be required to show proof of a negative test at their own expense 72 hours before tournament arrival. This will be required not only for players but caddies, along with others inside the tour’s bubble."

So it seems after June all they need is a negative test 72 hours before they arrive. So if they are clear on Monday, they will be good to go.
