Why is this a head scratcher?

This team doesn't have a clear-cut ace. Might as well pitch to matchups more than anything else. If we can't beat VCU or Campbell with Harding or Fristoe, we don't have any business advancing anyway.

It's pretty simple actually. Two options

1 Pitching your #3 in game 1 indicates you believe the risks/consequences of losing a #3 vs #1 matchup in game 1 are worth the benefit of a #2 vs #3/4 matchup in game 3
2 Pitching your #1 in game 1 indicates you believe the risks/consequences of losing a #3 vs #1 matchup in game 1 are not worth the benefit of a #2 vs #3/4 matchup in game 3.

Lemonis chose option 2. I tend to agree with him because we really should be HEAVILY favored in a #3 vs #3/4 in game 3 so why take on the increased risk in game 1?

Bednar also only pitched a short relief outing last week. I don't know if that also played into it because he was going to pitch at some point this weekend anyway, but he definitely needs the work.

It will also be interesting to me to see if they use Sims late if it's a tight game.

If it’s a tight game late, I think you have to use Sims. Just don’t bring him in for a 2-inning save with a 3-run lead like we’ve done a couple of times.

I can go either way, but

Its so sweet to win those first two games with minimal damage to your bullpen. 2 good starts out of Bednar and McCloud and it doesnt matter come Sunday. We'll be well rested and sitting pretty. Gotta win the first 2.

This place would 17ing melt down if we threw Harding, he gets rocked and we blow thru 3-4 pitchers in a Friday afternoon loss.

I think we are about to take the leash off Sims. We used Cole Gordon in 6 of our 7 NCAA Tourney games in 2019 after largely using him once a weekend in the regular season as well.

No kidding. Go with the odds to win game 1. If we can't win game 1, you damn sure shouldn't expect us to win game 2.

What an epic collapse that would end up being. But I'm putting it out there so it doesn't hurt as much if it happens.
