Remember their 94/95 season? Prior to this season, thats the only one in 37 years where Duke didnt make the NCAA Tournament.

Concerning why he announced that he'll retire after the upcoming season, here's my guess: he wants to give everyone (e.g., opponent schools/coaches/fans, etc.) a full opportunity to wash his feet and give him proper admiration before he walks off into the sunset.

Concerning why he announced that he'll retire after the upcoming season, here's my guess: he wants to give everyone (e.g., opponent schools/coaches/fans, etc.) a full opportunity to wash his feet and give him proper admiration before he walks off into the sunset.

Same reasons why a lot of people announce their retirement at a future date, especially legends in sports.

-sure, it gives a season long narrative of- 'this is the last time you will see X play/coach at Y'.
- more importantly, it allows the school plenty of time to find a replacement. It also keeps both current players and recruits from feeling surprised/slighted which could help with roster retention.

Sure, you could do that as president of Wake or GT. It'd be odd for a president to address the team like that, but go for it.

Giving proper lead time before retirement is vital to a smooth transition.
A guy on my team at work is retiring st the end of '21 and we have known for over a year now. We will have known for 20 months by the time he actually retires.
That's more than needed, but there is no downside to knowing.
It allows management to find and onboard a great replacement.

Applied to coaching, if other coaches know the Duke job will be available, they may adjust their plans which helps Duke maximize the candidate pool.

It's a win all the way around.
