But in 2021 baseball, they are the champions of the Atlantic 10 conference, which features only two teams with RPIs in the top 125.
VCU has an RPI of 31, so they are on the 2 seed line. Tennessee's opening opponent, Wright State, has an RPI of 27. Interestingly enough, Arkansas' 2 seed, Big Ten champion Nebraska has an RPI of 42.
VCU went 5-4 against teams that made the tournament with wins over Central Michigan, Old Dominion, Liberty and 2x over Virginia in midweek games.
Looking at VCU's weekends, specifically Saturdays, they were 7-4 with a bunch of close games. Mason Delane and Bradford Webb are their possible starters. Webb is 3-1 with a 3.10 ERA and has been their Saturday starter. Delane is 3-0 with a 4.67 ERA. The pitcher that pops off the page is a relief pitcher named Tyler Davis. 16 appearances and a 9-1 record against a 4.18 ERA and five saves. So 14 positive outcomes out of 16 appearances.
No pitcher on their roster averages more than 4 IP a game. Teams hit .262 against VCU pitching. They hit .289 as a team and are led in BA, RBI and HR by Tyler Locklear. He has some gaudy numbers. They can apparently hit the ball well.
They field at .965 and have made 61 errors this season. We are horrible in the field and field at .972 and have 55 errors.
Compared to SEC teams, they hit .289, which is the same as Ole Miss (2nd in the SEC). They have a 4.34 ERA, which is slightly worse than Arkansas (5th in SEC) And they would be dead last by a decent margin in fielding.
