I know we have a lot of bourbon and rye drinkers on the board, but I am sure more than a few of you enjoy a nice scotch too. Maybe others would like to try, but have not found the taste or don't know where to start. Well I may have found the place.

I have been "drinking" scotch for years. Don't really care for blends the same way I don't care for Canadian whiskey. Just tastes like alcohol to me. Maybe once every few months I would get on a kick. And pick up a bottle of single malt. I steer clear of the heavy peat stuff like Ardburg and Laphroaig. Tastes like someone ashed in my drink. I also don't care for the heavy sherry flavors of a lot of scotch like Macallan. So I have found a few drinkers in Dalwhinnie 15, Glenfiddich 12, and Bunnahabhain 12.

The Glenfiddich is the lightest, crispest of the group with a little sweet apple flavor. Dalwhinnie is similar with a peppery burn at the end. Bunnahabhain has a little peat for effect, but doesn't go into the heavy peat of other Islay whiskies.

All are good in their own right, but I have never been blown away like I am with a good bottle of bourbon.... Until now. I'm sure it's just a gimmick targeted at Americans, but consider me a sucker. I'm hooked. Glenfiddich 14 year Bourbon Barrel Reserve.

I have seen it forever, but never tried it until last night. Don't make that mistake if you are a bourbon lover who wants to like scotch more. You can read up, but basically most scotch is aged in used bourbon barrels. Some are then finished in sherry barrels. Well this bad boy is finished in a new charred oak barrel, the same way bourbon ages.

I'm not super nerdy about all the notes, but this thing has a little bit of the sweetness of bourbon, a little bit of the apple taste in Glenfiddich 12, and a kick at the end that reminds of Michters.

That's my best comp. I have never had one if those 20 or 25 year old Michters, but I imagine it tasting like this. But instead of a few thousand for the bottle, you can get it for $50 all over town.

I highly recommend, cheers.

My favorite is Laphroig 10 year. I actually like the medicinal taste of the strong peat. I can’t explain why but I know it definitely isn’t for everyone.

Did you mean Aberlour or Aberfeldy? Or are you a lucky SOB that lives in a state where you can buy good scotch at the grocery store?

Thanks. Does anyone know if we can get this in Mississippi? I drink mostly high rye bourbons and some less peaty scotchs like Balvenie, Mcallan, and Glenfiddich. So really looking forward to trying it.

It should be available anywhere. Supposedly the most widely distributed scotch in the US.

Glenmorangie Quinta Ruben...nice balance of smoky peat and sweet finish, matured in old Port wine barrels.

View attachment 20392

I will try the OP recommendation, just because all his other posts are really good and I've never disagreed w/ him ever.
BUT - I tend to like more flavorful stuff and the Quinta Ruban is a great non-peaty but flavorful drink.
And I do prefer peat, but if I can't have it, Quinta Ruban and Aberlour 12/16 are what I go with.

Give Talisker a go if you want to try the smokey flavor out, that flavor is what draws me to scotch when I do choose it. I know it is blasphemous or whatever but I put a HALF ice cube in most scotch. I know scotch is meant to be sipped and sipping it neutralizes the feeling you're drinking isopropyl alcohol but I drink faster than sipping makes possible and prefer my alcohol cold. If I'm in a 'neat' mood I still add a touch of water. I drink bourbon on the rocks and yes it's cool to drink neat whiskey or whisky but I prefer enjoying myself more than most things so I do that contra tradition.

Based on the multiple recs and the port vs sherry finish, I am going to give the Quinta Ruban a go on my next bottle. Just looked online and my store has a bottle of it on sale for $50. It looks like Glenmorangie has replaced the 12 year version with a 14 recently, so I guess that's going to be a little bit more expensive, but more depth.

I’d be shocked if Brewski’s doesn’t have it.

I love a good scotch. It’s definitely an acquired taste. Don’t drink as much as used to (health reasons) but I still like to a good bourbon, rye, or scotch. I too like the glenfiddich. Lavagulin was almost too smoky moss for me. In a pinch I would drink a blend.

Normally I’ll keep a bottle Glenfiddich 12 around the house along with my Whistle Pig and Makers.

Anything from the Balvenie is going to.be extremely good. If you can find it, Highland Park 15 is very good. I greatly prefer single malts, but Johnny Walker Green Label is good. And while I’ll definitely drink cheap bourbon, I agree with a previous poster in saying that I’ve never found a good cheap scotch. $60 to $100 is what it usually takes for me to enjoy a bottle of scotch. Needless to say, I drink more bourbon than scotch.

Fixed it for you.

I like a peaty scotch on occasion, but Laphroig 10 year tastes like kerosene to me. Lavagulin is the only peaty scotch I will buy. I've had other peaty scotches I like at bars and other people's houses, but I drink it so rarely that by the time I'm looking to buy a peaty scotch, I've always forgotten what they were.

I have not found a decent cheap scotch,,. I can’t you help there
GLenmorangie 10 is what you're looking for. At least in Louisiana, you can get it somewhere in the $30's. The Lasanta and Quinta Ruben you can find in the $40's. Best value out there as far as I can tell. WIll probably be a little more expensive than that in Mississippi.

Oban 14 deserves a mention. It's a really good lightly-peated whisky - huge step down from Laphroaig and the Islays, but still a whiff of peat. It's up to $70 where I live, though. I swear Nick Offerman ruined whisky prices in the US - Lagavulin was $20 cheaper 2 years ago.

I'm with you on the sweet stuff. I don't care for caramel notes or sweet bourbon. Give Long Branch a try. Made by Wild Turkey I believe. It is a celebrity whiskey (Matthew McCounahay) but it's great for those who don't like sweet bourbons. Finished a mesquite barrel with a nice smokey flavor. Roughly $34?

Anything over 10 or 12 years old isn't as good to me. You've got to love scotch to go with old stuff.

Where did you get it for $50? I paid $75 in Columbus for a bottle. I opened the bottle and my goodness what a great aroma! My wife hates whisky but she loved the smell so much she tasted it which shocked me. She didn't like the taste though which didn't shock me. However, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It has a rich caramel color - different from the 12 year old bottle. This whisky is too good to mix or pour over ice. It is perfect for sipping and enjoying a little after burn. Thanks for letting me know about it. Most of the liquor stores in Columbus had sold out BTW.

I can't pick up enough of a difference to justify the price change for anything past 12 or 14 except some of the lower end scotches seem to have an ok 18 year old but not 12, but that's probably just in my head and not a real difference.

IMO, The sweet spot for scotch is 14-16 years. For bourbon, it's 10-12.

There is a difference in taste after that age, but it is a lot more subtle.

As for the OP, there are lots of good suggestions I'll add try some lowland styles (glenkinchie is a solid one, and I have heard good things about Auchentoshan).
I like the Islay style.

I used to be able to get Lagavulin 16 for under $50, it's over $90 now.

(Of course I was buying 12 and 15 year Van Winkle at $40 and $60 a bottle then too, until all you other 17'ers discovered it.)

Glad you liked Ranchdawg. That newly charred oak barrel really hits my American sensibilities. $50 is the MSRP. I live in a state controlled liquor state that doesn't mark allow markups. When I say state controlled, even the retail liquor stores are owned by the state and the employees at the liquor stores are government employees.

It has its pros and cons, but I never pay more than retail, but some stuff they just don't carry. So I order some stuff online. My go too place is Blackwells out of CA. I think they are a big national wine shipper, but they have lots of good bourbons and scotch too. I get my Michter's and Garrison Brother's from them and look for other stuff. For me its about $20 shipping for one bottle and $25 for 3. If you get over $200, its free.

They have the Glenfiddich 14 for $50. So if you want to look around and save up till you need plenty of goodies, it may be worth it to build up a $200 order. Never had a broken bottle and they offer insurance for $1.00 or so just in case.

Evan Williams 1783. Best for your buck there is... no doubt.

Facts. It’s my “house boutbon” that I drink most often when I’m not grabbing a top shelf or premium. It’s good enough to make a manhatten, old fashion, or even just rocks w/splash of bitters, but also cheap enough to mix with a coke and not feel like you’re wasting good bourbon.

If you like light scotch, try Jura 10. It's very good and under $50 per bottle. If you're looking to try something a little unusual and complex, Glenlivet Enigma is absolutely incredible. A little more expensive though.

Following up. Per the recs of Keyser and Hdogg, I snagged a bottle of Quinta Ruban 14. The state sets the prices here and screwed up and priced it at $39.95 instead of $54.95. It's in some kind of special giraffe themed tin as Glenmorangie is apparently a big supporter of saving the giraffes.

View attachment 20543

My overall take is, its pretty good. I like the port finish way better than sherry finish (Macallan for instance.) If I were to describe that difference to me, the port finish almost tastes like a chocolate covered raisin. The sherry finish tastes like prune juice. I can see why this would be someones favorite. It has a little bit of the oak that we americans tend to like in our whiskey as well. The spice is more of a spearmint than a pepper spice, but it still has a little bite.

I think this is a bottle I will keep on hand to drink with others that are new to Scotch. It's really easy to drink and has lots of flavor characteristics. If it was always $40, it might be the best value in the entire single malt world. Even at $55, its worth keeping on the shelf for a change of pace.

Thanks for the rec gents. I like it.

Bonus. When I snagged the QR, I noticed a bottle of Balcones Brimstone on the shelf. I have had the True Blue and Baby Blue in the past, but never tried the Brimstone. Since I have been living in Scotch/smokey whiskey world lately, I had to to give it a go. Ho-Lee-Crap.

I don't know if I can recommend it or not, but if you want LOTS of smoke in your whiskey, this is the world champion. I imagine a lot of people that try this would hate it. But I didn't. It's a weirdly unique experience. The beginning was almost overpowering but after a couple of sips, it really became addictive. (In that same way that eating hot peppers is addictive I guess.) I tried it first in a Glencairn neat. After finishing that I ended up pouring the next one over a chunk of ice and it really was great. I ended up getting a little deeper in the bottle than I intended last night.

The only way to describe the flavor is like drinking a good single malt and biting a chunk of brisket with a thick bark smoked on a stick burner. The smoke flavor was almost identical to my favorite BBQ place in the world, Louie Mueller BBQ in Taylor, TX. It's such a unique and powerful taste, that I could see some people really hating it. And at $50, its hard to recommend. With that said, if you are looking for a smokey single malt, but don't like the "medicinal" (as someone pointed out in this thread) character of peat, Balcones Brimstone is right up your ally. Or if you were ever looking for a sipping whiskey to nurse while smoking a brisket, Balcones Brimstone is the one.
