But why doesn’t the university utilize DWS as a concert venue during the off-season? Seems like it could be a good income source, I could be way off on this.

Also why doesn’t Starkville try to make its festivals like the Cotton District Arts Festival more attractive to potential visitors by getting a decently known music act? It’s always John Bob and the Possum Hill Gang from Sturgis.

I don't know about DWS but for things like the Cotton District Arts Festival, it all comes down to money. And to get a larger act would likely mean charging admission to that event.

On item 1... Not a lot of headline acts are coming to Starkville, MS for a Stadium Concert. I'm sure there are some smaller artists that would, but generally speaking, stadiums are reserved for the giant acts. Nobody wants to see a place half empty. From what I can see there have only been 8 stadium tours in history to average more than 35,000 people.

The Stones-2 times
Madonna, Coldplay, and Taylor Swift-1 time each.

Gonna be really hard to book those acts on a stadium tour in Starkville MS.



Same logic applies to the festival. Budget and attendance dictate the level of artist. Love me some Starkvegas festivals, but you probably aren't getting the ACL lineup to Bulldog Bash. You have to pay big $$ to get big acts.

Maybe because college athletics department folks have images of fans of ZZ Top and other groups trashing the football stadium at the University of Texas.

I saw Jack White at the hump a few years ago. It was a pretty poor showing. The place was empty and the vibe was pretty meh. The next night he played a sold out Madison square garden.

I was at that show. The music was great-- the atmosphere wasn't except for the brief chat I had with a couple guys in Chicano Batman which opened for him.

My dad saw Bruce Springsteen at the Hump in February 1981 on The River tour. The Boss was nowhere near as big as he would get after releasing Born In the USA, but was a big act, especially after the Hungry Heart single. Not that that has anything to do with DWS or the Cotton District Arts Festival. Still though, that was peak Boss.

You're making me feel old now. My first concert was Kansas at MSU November 7, 1979. I saw several good concerts at MSU in the 80's.

Who else did you see; did Kansas draw a good crowd? I graduated in '02 and in my 4.5 years there were a few good size acts that came to the Hump.

Bon Jovi played the hump in the bands prime. I was not old enough to be there but remember seeing reference to it in the concourse. I did see a dead atmosphere Bob Dylan show as a student (1998 maybe). My grandparents came up and stayed at my apartment one Saturday night to see the Gaither Gospel Show. That was sold out and a huge success and I’m not sure a single current student at that time attended. Also late 90s.

Cheap Trick was the only big name I remember playing at the Hump while I was at State. Previously I did see the Oak Ridge Boys at the Hump in their "Oom Bapa Mow Mow" prime!

Bon Jovi must have been in '86 or '87. Cinderella opened up. I was in high school, but somehow convinced my parents I should go with a carload of friends and spend the night in Starkville. I thought they were so gullible back then. It was only later when I grew up that I found out they knew about most of the stupid **** I did.

It was a good crowd and Kansas is always a great show. I also saw 38 Special, Huey Lewis, Joe Walsh, Stevie Nicks, Pat Benatar, Autograph, and Whitesnake that I can remember.
