This is the right answer unless they are well off enough that it's not going to make a difference. I went to a school that was just small enough that people felt obligated to get damn near everybody in the class a gift, and large enough for that to result in a ridiculous amount of gifts and money spent, so we got lots of gifts. I remember getting knives, bag chairs, umbrellas, mint juleps engraved with my initials (which I have no clue what happened to them and don't even remember who dropped the money on them, so that was a good waste of money by whoever got them for me), wallets, gift certificates to local merchants, key chains, luggage tags, and I'm sure I'm forgetting plenty, and I think other than the gift certificates, I probably got at least two of everything (even the mint juleps). Lots of solid gifts , and I'm not sure any of them lasted past my freshman year. The cash didn't last through my freshman year either, but I'm pretty sure I appreciated being able to afford to go to the bar an extra night more than I appreciated having a nice bag chair to take to have at the tailgate.

I got a damn letter opener and wondered what in the hell I was going to do with that. 40+ years later I've still got it and I bet it hasn't opened 2 letters in that time. It may make a hell of an oyster knife as suggested by 57stratdawg, I'll try that

You have to realize that some gifts lean towards one gender more than the other.
Giving an 18yo straight girl a box of assorted AXE body spray probably wont be helpful. So maybe giving a 17 about pronouns is beneficial.

I usually just give a stock of gift cards to restaurants wherever they will go to college. A kid will find a way to blow money unless they're good with money but they can always fall back on the gift cards to eat if they blow their money...
