Bo and Blake discuss the burning question around the future of Rebels baseball coach Mike Bianco, and whether or not he could leave for LSU or be fired for a lack of postseason success. The guys discuss how the hot seat for LSU coach Paul Mainieri could play a part in impacting what happens in Oxford, and who Ole Miss would look toward if a coaching search were to happen.

Bianco would be a home run for LSU. And he should absolutely take that job. He's done all he can do at Ole Miss and he's simply hanging on at this point. Their window was the late 2000s and let's face it, they are still a '2000s' era program, from their uniforms to their stadium. And selfishly, I want him out of there because they will not do any better.

Imagine Bianco's resume if his postseason record matched his regular season record. I think if that were the case he would have ~3 more Super Regional appearances and ~2 more trips to Omaha. LSU might have already poached him had he done that.

I don't believe in regular season vs. postseason success. It all averages out at the end of the day. I think Ole Miss just hasn't been as good as they think they've been. They've also been the benefactor of some very good marketing. But, they are certainly improved from before, and Bianco is solely responsible for moving that needle. If LSU looked at it through these lenses, they'd see how easy of a hire this should be for them.

Perhaps they have underachieved a little bit while we overachieved, but program history can do that for you. Once you break through to a certain level, seems it's easier to get back there. But even Ole Miss' 2014 team was little lucky, they had some good seniors come back that normally would have left, combined with some pitchers just coming out of nowhere for them.

It's amazing how much better State has been in the postseason under the current format.

Obviously, the way to set yourself up for postseason runs is to host Regionals and Super Regionals. So your Super Regional appearances should more or less match your Regionals hosted, and your CWS appearances should more or less match your Super Regionals hosted. Knowing that you aren't going to win all the events you host and you're going to pick up some on the road, this should more or less balance out.

State...
Regionals hosted: 5
Super Regional appearances: 9 (+4)
Super Regionals hosted: 3
CWS appearances: 4 (+1)

State has lost one Regional at home but picked up five(!) on the road. We lost one Super Regional at home but picked up two on the road.

Ole Miss...
Regionals hosted: 9
Super Regional appearances: 6 (-3)
Super Regionals hosted: 3
CWS appearances: 1 (-2)

Ole Miss has lost three Regionals at home and has never won one on the road*. They've lost all three Super Regionals at home(!) but picked up one on the road.

*-This is amazing. They've gone on the road for eight Regionals and never stumbled upon a win.

Yeah, I'm not saying those teams with regular season success should or shouldn't have won in the postseason. It may be that they underachieved or that they were overrated going into the postseason. I'm just pointing out that it is uneven. Either those teams were overrated or they underachieved, probably a combination of both.

I try not to, because it hurts my feelings. But you’re right.

Bianco has been there since 2001!

SEC CWS appearances since 2001:
Florida - 8
LSU - 7
Arkansas - 6
South Carolina - 6
Georgia - 4
State - 4
Vanderbilt - 4
Tennessee - 2
Texas A&M - 2
Auburn - 1
Ole Miss - 1
Alabama - 0
Kentucky - 0
Missouri - 0

His postseason struggles are a very real thing

I disagree that Bianco is solely responsible for moving that needle, but do agree he’s a primary reason, obviously. He’s done a very good job, is the reason we have a program that we as fans even have a reason to expect more out of. But he’s also been the recipient of extreme buy-in by a fan base that was not bought in, previously. All it took was him giving us something to be excited about. And the administration has invested in his program, and him, heavily. Someone on OM board posted (I don’t know that it’s accurate, let me be clear) that Ole Miss spent more on baseball last year than any program in the country (not sure what this is based on? Total budget? Recruiting budget? Coaches salaries? I don’t know?) Whether that’s true or not, we all agree Ole Miss has made a substantial investment in improving the once dormant program. I feel like early on, Bianco over-achieved. Then there was a stretch where he was pretty much on par with reasonable expectations. Now, we are entering a stretch of under-achieving that is starting to outlive the over-achievement. And that’s probably more acceptable if he’s actively trying to make changes to do things differently, but he’s not. Him and Lemonis are pretty much the antithesis of one another in terms of embracing analytics, usage of bullpen, shifts, etc. And one isn’t necessarily right and the other wrong, but when you’ve consistently gotten similar results year-after-year, maybe try something different?

Ole Miss baseball is not, and will likely never be MSU. I can admit that, I’m not a child. But, he’s had the resources and investment and support to close the gap more than he has. I think that’s fair to say. I’ve always been a Bianco supporter and I’m not saying I am out on him now. But the questions and frustrations around him are valid. And it all played out right in front of y’all’s (hey WSUMSU75 or whatever the letters are!) eyes on Sunday. We continue to recruit power bats and assume they’ll fit somewhere defensively, which showed over the weekend. (Our defense sucks) And we continue to overvalue left/right matchups. And we continue to use our bullpen like it’s 1994.

With all that said, we are still a very good team, which is what makes these decisions so hard. In a vacuum, going 3-6 @ Florida, Arkansas and @ MSU isn’t that bad. You’d rather be 4-5, but those are 3 tough series. But it’s the fact that all 3 of our wins never really were that close and came down to a coach’s decision making, and 4-5 of our losses were swung by the opposing coach either making a smart decision sooner than Mike, or having better depth (recruiting) than us. It’s that frustration of being so close, but never quite getting there. We are the young guy who’s dated the same girl for a couple years, but just can’t quite get past 3rd base. You love her, she’s good to you, and you should probably accept and be happy with that situation. But, what if.....

You’re right those stats are amazing. But, I think they also highlight two things that most reasonable fans already recognized, but it just puts it right in front of you. And that is 1- MSU has been really good in the postseason. You have often “over-achieved” compared to expectations and seemingly embraced being the underdog. And 2- (and this one was much more obvious) Ole Miss has been very bad in the postseason, and does not handle being the hunted very well. It’s bad that the year we went to Omaha I was actually glad we were going on the road for Super Regional, because I was worried about the ghosts of Oxford Super’s past, and dang sure worried they’d be exasperated by MSU being the team in Oxford. Us with everything to lose, against y’all playing with house money was not a situation I was looking forward to, I’ll be honest.

I love and am a believer in statistics. And statistics, particularly in baseball, produce a lot of outliers. But, at some point, it’s not an outlier and there are other factors at play that statistics can’t represent.

The good thing about bianco is that he made mississippi care about baseball. The bad thing about bianco is that he made mississippi care about baseball.

Before bianco, mississippi baseball was a long running joke. He made them relevant. He also made the rubes care about baseball and in doing so, he took away their defense when we regularly wore their asses out. They can no longer look up from their bourbon and coke to snidely reply that they simply do not give a rat's rear about 'stick-ball'. Now they win a bunch of games but still have to endure routine tail kickings by the dogs and watch us regularly go to omaha while they are o.m.a.h.a.

I'll give you that, Ole Miss fans have bought in. But I'm starting to think that while all that helps us recruit well, it's still not the end-all-be-all in winning. It comes back to your talent, and other teams just bring in more, whether it's due to scholarships or whatever.

I agree with you on that. A lot of our teams are just not very deep. There’s some high-end talent, but we don’t have the depth (typically) of Arkansas or MSU or Vandy or Florida. And there are some valid reasons for that, you’re right. But there’s no sense hashing them out here, because I know y’all certainly do not care. MSU has had some of those disadvantages during that timeframe, also. There’s been some subtle tweaks made by your administration to help a little, which is smart. But, unless we get a lottery based scholarship system like Louisiana and Georgia and (I think?) Tennessee, then we have a hurdle to overcome. And I think that’s where the fan buy-in and facilities becomes a big deal.

When you lose you best coach in a long time you usually have a hard time for a while. The replacement almost never measures up. That goes triple when you fire him.

I'm pretty sure that it was MSU's success in baseball that made mississippi care about baseball, to a much greater extent than Bianco did. Bless their hearts, but after investing so much in their baseball program, they are still being dominated by MSU, to the tune of 16 losses and 3 wins in the last 19 games.

If MSU's success is what made them care they sure took their sweet time getting there because we had been rolling in baseball a good 20+ years before they even hired bianco.

In any case bianco is the one that brought it to life and made baseball popular with the shart masses.

My cousin thinks LSU is secretly paying Bianco to do just good enough to not be fired while sabotaging post season play. Yes, he's serious.

The general attitude among their fans before Bianco is that they simply didn't care about it. "Football is king! etc." Bianco gave them a chance to steal State's thunder. They paid attention and learned a lot from the Polk era, even though they said they didn't care.
