A Strange OT: Why are dinner plates predominantly round?

My wife and I recently replaced our everyday dishes with square plates. I have absolutely loved these plates. It has got me to thinking why round plates won this battle? A 13 inch square plate has more surface area than a 13 inch round plate. The food has more separation room on that plate. They fit in the dishwasher better. They fit in your square cabinets better. So if they are so superior, why are round plates 98% or more of the market and in people's homes.

I'll never go round again. Sixpack, what say ye?

I imagine the old potters wheel is the reason. I made three items at camp in 5th grade... A plate, a bowl, and an ash tray. Round is easy, I honestly don't know how in the heck you make square stuff.

Because the Big Round Plate lobbyists in DC have been lining the pockets politicians for years and years to make sure that square plate technology never sees the light of day from government funding. All the while, they also paying off other special interest groups to distract the public with issues of far inferior importance like tax reform, gun control, weed legalization, and pandemic response strategies so that the true crime hiding in plain sight goes undetected.

We have some square plates and some round plates.

In my opinion, the square plates are better for the reasons you gave (more room for food on the plate, easier to put into the dishwasher and cabinets).

As others have said, round plates won because of the potter's wheel. However, wouldn't a round plate also give you the most area on the plate for the least amount of material required to make the plate?

Circles and spheres are the most efficient shapes with regard to conserving materials, aren't they?

This is a random OT topic. While we discuss the square vs round debate, I’ll ask this question. Why do we store coffee cups and glasses upside down and bowls and plates right side up? Is it just for stacking purposes or do we worry more about stuff getting in cups and glasses?

My favorite type of pizza is sicilian which is square and fills the box perfectly. It fills those wasted corner spaces. Probably the easier to make by hand thing again is why there is round pizza.

On a related note, it really grinds my gears when I am eating a meal where you have to fix your plate through a line, and someone puts all the forks on top of the stack of plates. What the hell? How is that in any way a good idea?

Restaurants are the market for mass produced plates. Rounds are easier to balance on a tray and when they're on a shelf and not in a cabinet the corners on squares seem to stick out just enough to get bumped and the tower falls
